A first-year student was allegedly stripped naked and tortured by former students inside the student’s union room of St Paul’s Cathedral Mission College in Kolkata, reported The Time of India.

The incident, which took place on 17 May, was captured on video and circulated to make fun of the junior student.

The video clip of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the student pleading for mercy at St Paul's Cathedral College even as his clothes were forcibly removed in front of a group of people.

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee , on 3 June, said "strict action" will be taken against anyone found involved in the act.

Chatterjee, who received a written complaint from the student, told reporters that anyone found involved in the misdeed will have to bear consequences.

If the allegations were found to be true in the inquiry report of the college, the government will show ‘zero tolerance’ to such misconduct.

The student, who claimed to be a member of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit of the college, told the media on 2 June that he was subjected to torture by some senior members of the students' wing on 17 May, when he inquired about the expenses incurred in organising an upcoming fest in the college.

According to The Times of India report, the boy also carried out a failed suicide attempt out of humiliation.

TMCP state president Jaya Dutta said she will speak with the college authorities and TMCP members of North Kolkata unit before taking a call on the matter.

The union will take necessary action against its members, if they were found guilty, she said.
