In a sharply-worded statement, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said that the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 would create a "disturbed, distorted and divided India where religion will become determinant of nationhood".
She said the passage marks a "dark day" in constitutional history of India and a "victory of narrow minded and bigoted forces" over the country's pluralism.
She also reiterated Congress' determination to be relentless in its struggle against what she alleged was the BJP's "dangerously divisive and polarising agenda".
On Wednesday, after a six-hour debate, 125 members of the Rajya Sabha voted in favour of passing the Bill.
