Tharoor Takes Ravi Shankar Prasad, Kerala BJP Chief To Court

The Congress MP took BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad and PS Sreedharan Pillai to court over alleged defamatory remarks.

Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday, 15 March, took legal action against Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Kerala BJP President PS Sreedharan Pillai over alleged defamatory statements against him.

The Congress MP took to twitter and said, “It is time for the lies to stop. Fight a clean campaign if you can.”

The first defamation suit against Prasad is related to a press conference in October 2018, when the BJP leader had allegedly accused Tharoor of being involved in a murder case, reported Manoromaonline.

“He falsely and without any basis accused me of being a murder accused. He said it twice and posted it on social media as well. My lawyers wrote to him and told him that he can withdraw these words and apologise. But he refuses to withdraw them.”

Expressing his anger over the accusation, Tharoor told Manoramaonline he had no option but to go to court and demand action.

‘Irresponsible’ Statement By BJP Leader: Tharoor

Referring to the second defamation suit against Kerala BJP President Sreedharan Pillai, Tharoor said it was “another irresponsible statement by a BJP leader.”

Tharoor alleged Sreedharan had “invented an imaginary marriage to an imaginary person” and claimed that the MP had driven her to suicide, according to Manoramaonline.

The Congress leader said that knowing Sreedharan, he had not taken the comments seriously. However, is is unacceptable to resort to such tactics when they have nothing to speak against me, Tharoor added.

Tharoor also claimed that the BJP leaders had nothing to point to, and that was the reason they chose to run a “campaign of character assassination based on lies and falsehoods.”

“This must be stopped and the courts are the right place to stop it,” he said.
