RTI Activist & His Friend Shot Dead in Bihar’s Jamui District

A Right to Information (RTI) activist and his friend were shot dead on Sunday, 1 July, by unidentified assailants in Bihar’s Jamui district, reported IANS.

Valmiki Yadav and his friend Karu Yadav were attacked by motorcycle-borne assailants near Bichwe village in Sikandra police station area around 7 pm on Sunday, 1 July, a district police Rampukar Singh told The Times of India.

Yadav is said to have exposed several rackets and financial irregularities in the public welfare schemes and developmental works in the district.

This is third such crime in the last three months.

On 19 June, Rajendra Singh, an RTI activist who had exposed several discrepancies in various government schemes like Indira Awas Yojana, teachers’ appointment and Life Insurance Corporation was shot in Bihar’s East Champaran district, reported News18.

Another RTI activist was shot dead in Vaishali district in April this year.

In the light of these recent incidents, National Campaign For Peoples’ Right to Information has written a letter urging the Bihar Chief Minister for effective implementation of Whistleblowers Act.
