Focus Will Be on Safety, Says New Railway Board Chairman Lohani

Mittal tendered his resignation after two train mishaps in UP within a week.

Newly-appointed Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani has promised that the focus of the board under his leadership will be on safety and modernistaion.

Speaking to ANI, Lohani said:

Our priority is to end corruption & VIP culture. Focus will be on safety & station modernization.

Earlier the CMD of Air India, Ashwani Lohani was appointed as the Chairman to the Board following AK Mittal’s resignation from the post on Wednesday.

Mittal resigned in the wake of two tragic train derailments in under five days in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the report, he was censured after the Utkal Express derailed near Muzaffarnagar on 19 August, killing 22 people and wounding over 100 others.

Early on Wednesday morning, eight coaches of Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express derailed near Auraiya district, injuring around 74 people.

According to a Livemint report, Mittal was first in the history of Indian Railways to receive a two-year extension. He was to remain in the post till he turned 62 in 2018. His re-appointment, in July 2017, was approved by the Prime Minister’s office.
