1. Kamala Mills Fire: 3 Accused Remanded to Police Custody

Three people, including a fire officer who were arrested by the Mumbai Police on Saturday, 20 January, in connection with the Kamala Mills fire, were remanded to police custody till January 25.

The police told the holiday court on Sunday, 21 January, that they wanted to investigate the roles of arrested accused Ravi Bhandari, a partner at Kamala Mills, Utkarsh Pandey, the owner of hookah supply firm Nirvana, and fire officer Rajendra Patil in connection with the December 29 fire, in which 14 persons lost their lives.

The investigating officer told the court that Patil, the fire officer, had given a ‘fake certificate’ incorrectly stating that the two restaurants were open air restaurants a week before the fire. Patil was also negligent in not ensuring there were fire exits, he added.

2. Cop Attempts Suicide at CM’s House

A Bihar Military Police (BMP) jawan allegedly tried to commit suicide by shooting himself with his INSAS rifle at a sentry post on the premises of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's official residence at 1, Anne Marg, under Sachiwalaya police late on Saturday night, 20 January.

Sources said Puran Gurung (28) of the Gorkha Regiment was facing financial crisis and his wife, a teacher, had reached the city from Darjeeling in West Bengal recently.

Station House Officer of Sachivalaya police station RK Bhaskar said police were waiting for Gurung to recover so that his statement could be recorded.

3. Dacoits Attack Two Lucknow Villages; Pradhan’s Son Killed, Three Injured

The 20-year-old son of a Lucknow village pradhan was killed and at least three others were injured after an attack by unidentified robbers on two villages in the Kakori police station area on Sunday, 21 January.

A police officer informed that three persons – Mohit Kumar (20), Raghunath (60) and Lala (22) – were injured and are currently undergoing treatment. They were said to be out of danger. Police are yet to prepare an estimate of the looted items.

4. Man Held for Murder of Friend Who He Suspected of Having an Affair with Wife

A torn visiting card recovered at a murder spot led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man from Delhi for the alleged murder of his friend, whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife, the police said on Sunday, 21 January.

Pawan Shukla was arrested from a de-addiction centre at Delhi’s Tughlakabad Extension on Sunday. He had been hiding there since the murder of his friend, Devender, on January 18.

5. Rajkot: Murder Accused Shot Dead

A murder accused out on bail was shot dead by an unidentified assailant on Morbi Road in Rajkot on Sunday, 21 January.

Police said Rushirajsinh Sarvaiya (21) was shot dead by the assailant who had covered his face with a handkerchief, at a medical store near Jai Jawan Jai Kisan Society on Morbi Road where Sarvaiya used to stay with his friend Pratap Rajput.

"It appears that the assailant knew about Sarvaiya's scheduled visit to the medical store and he was waiting for him. At 11.30 am, when Sarvaiya arrived at the shop, the assailant shot at him. Sarvaiya was rushed to the Rajkot Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead," said an official from B-Division police station of Rajkot police.

6. Two Boys Killed in Grenade Explosion in Manipur

Two minor boys were killed on Sunday, 21 January, and one boy seriously injured when a hand grenade exploded in Manipur’s Imphal East district, police said.

The three were playing in Suvunglo village in Khoupum police station jurisdiction when they chanced upon a foreign-made hand grenade. Not knowing it was an explosive, they began tossing it around and it exploded.

One of the boys was killed on the spot while two others were seriously injured. The second boy died shortly after admission to a district hospital. The identity of the dead and the injured could not be known immediately.

Officials said it could not be ascertained yet if the hand grenade belonged to some insurgent group or state or central forces.

7. Gang of Mobile Snatchers Arrested for Murders

The Ghaziabad police on Sunday, 21 January, arrested a gang of eight mobile snatchers who allegedly murdered two persons in two separate incidents in the district.

Police said the gang members did not hesitate in killing their targets who resisted the snatching attempt.

Masuri police, along with a team of crime branch, arrested eight persons from near the Masuri rail bridge on Sunda morning and recovered six knives, a mobile phone and Rs 3,200 from their possession. The eight accused have been identified as Naeem, Wahid Shahrukh, Gulfam, of Dasna; Israil and Aakil, of Meerut; Salman, of Bulandshahr and Aslam, of Sahibabad.

8. Realtor Hacked to Death, Wife Finds Body

The wife of a Delhi-based second-hand sale vehicles dealer and realtor found her husband’s dead body, that was already decomposing and covered with multiple wounds, on Saturday, 20 January, when she returned from Shivamogga to their house in Panchasheelanagar.

There were at least eight deep cut injuries on Ganesh’s body and police suspect that more than one person could be involved in the murder.

Deputy Commissioner (West) MN Anuchet said that a probe has begun to trace the accused at the earliest.

9. Boyfriend Raped, Refused to Marry Her, Says Woman

A 29-year-old MNC employee in Bengaluru has been accused of rape and sexual exploitation by a 24-year-old woman whom he reportedly befriended on Facebook. The woman has filed a complaint with the police saying the man has raped her more than once and he allegedly refused to marry her saying that his parents would not approve of her as his wife as she was dark-skinned.

In her complaint with the HAL police, the woman claims the accused laced her juice with sedatives before raping her more than once in the recent past at Murudeshwara a few months ago and later in Madikeri.
