1. TN to Probe Jayalalithaa’s Death

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday announced that an inquiry commission headed by a retired High Court judge would be constituted to probe the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in December last year.

Mr. Palaniswami also said that ‘Veda Nilayam’, the erstwhile residence of Jayalalithaa in Poes Garden here, would be converted into a public memorial, an announcement that was slammed by Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar, who questioned the unilateral decision sans consultations with heirs. Till date, it is not clear if Jayalalithaa left behind a will bequeathing her vast estate to anyone.

2. Actor Oviya Rules Out Re-Entering TV Show

Actor Oviya asks fans not to abuse the contestants who were mean to her.

Much to the disappointment of her fans, actor Oviya, who became popular as a contestant in Bigg Boss being telecast on Star Vijay, has ruled out re-entering the show as a wild card contestant.

Speaking to her fans through a video, Oviya also appealed to her fans to not abuse or corner the contestants such as Julie and Shakthi who appeared to be unkind to her while living inside the Bigg Boss house.

3. Deepa Terms Decision on Probe Panel, Memorial Political Opportunism

Deepa Jayakumar says Sasikala family behind the move; asserts that decision to convert Poes Garden into a memorial cannot be taken without consulting legal heirs.

Deepa Jayakumar, niece of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, has questioned the intention behind Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s sudden announcement that a commission of inquiry would be constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

She alleged that the Sasikala family was actually behind the move.

In a press conference at her residence on Thursday evening, she said the decision to probe the death at this stage was made as he was under pressure to prove his government’s majority.

4. Policeman Held for Harassing Woman

Vijaykumar repeatedly misbehaved with the woman, after which she lodged a complaint.

A 27-year old policeman attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police 13th Batallion in Avadi was arrested on charges of harassing a married woman in Kasimedu on Wednesday. According to police, Vijaykumar, a native of Villupuram district, was part of the Youth Brigade of the Tamil Nadu police.

Recently, he joined the Tamil Nadu Special Police 13th Batallion.

Vijaykumar used to go to Kasimedu to visit his relative. Two days ago, he met a 24-year old married woman, who was living with her two children.

5. ‘Conversion Boosted Social Mobility of These Dalits’

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan’s PhD thesis focuses on the mass conversion, present status of Meenakshipuram Dalits.

For Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan, pursuing an academic goal serves a political purpose. He is doing his PhD that relates directly to his politics. The field work and the data he collected for his doctoral thesis, “Analysis of conversion in Meenakshipuram — A micro-level case study”, shows that conversion to Islam had boosted the social mobility of Dalits in that village

Mr. Thirumavalavan has concluded that economic empowerment alone was not the incentive for Dalits in Meenakshipuram, Tirunelveli, to embrace Islam in the early eighties.

6. Man Held for Raping Daughter-in-Law

As he continued to repeat the offence, the victim reported the matter to her mother.

A 48-year-old man was arrested by the All-Women Police Station, Pulianthope, for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law, who is under aged. Police said the victim, aged 17, had been living with her husband in the latter’s home.

While she was alone, her father-in-law allegedly raped her repeatedly after giving sedatives.

7. Protest at MGR Centenary Event Embarrasses CM

Workers express anguish over Edappadi K. Palaniswami not announcing pay hikes.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami was left red faced after some revenue village staff belonging to various associations of the department protested during the MGR Centenary celebrations in which he participated here on Thursday.

Ironically, the event was organised by Revenue Minister R.B. Udayakumar with staff from various revenue villages present at the function at Kalaivanar Arangam.
