QBengaluru: Cabinet Clears Anti-Superstition Bill & More

1) Anti-Superstition Bill gets Karnataka Cabinet Nod

Deceased Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi was a crusader for the bill.  

The Karnataka Cabinet cleared the much-delayed and debated Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifices and other Inhuman Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Bill, 2017, popularly known as the Anti-Superstition Bill.

The Bill has proposed to ban made snana (rolling over banana leaves with food left over by Brahmins) at Kukke Subrahmanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district. However, it has not banned astrology or vaastu.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister TB Jayachandra said, “The issue of either banning or regulating vaastu and astrology was discussed, but no decision was taken.”

2) 56mm of Rain Brings Bengaluru to Its Knees, Again

During the monsoon months of June, July, August and September, Bengaluru receives an average 580 mm rain.

Once again, heavy showers crippled normal life in the city, leaving residents high and dry . Two citizens lost their lives, taking the total number of rain-related deaths in September to six.

Beginning late on Tuesday night, the downpour continued till Wednesday morning. Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, recorded a total rainfall of 55.8mm till 8.30am on Wednesday, which was enough to inundate the ill-equipped city. Several localities in east, south and north Bengaluru were inundated, inconveniencing residents and dampening the Dasara spirit.

3) 9-Year-Old, Friend, Die After Drinking Acid By Accident

Two boys, including one celebrating his ninth birthday, died after they consumed sulphuric acid mistaking it for soft drink in Chickpet on Wednesday night. The deceased have been identified as Sahil Shankar and Aryan Singh.

“Around 9pm, Sahil and Aryan went into a room where Shankar had stored sulphuric acid for jewellery-related work. The children mistook it for a soft drink, drank it and collapsed," an officer said. Guests rushed the children to a private hospital which referred them to Victoria Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead, a police officer said.

Police said Sahil was in class 3 and Aryan in class 2 at a private school in Chamarajapet.

4) Bengaluru Gets New Mayor

Sampath Raj took oath on Thursday.

Sampath Raj of DJ Halli ward on Thursday was unanimously elected as the 51st Mayor of Bengaluru. He got 139 votes in favour of his candidacy. As the choice of mayor was already decided within the Congress earlier this week, it was an effortless win for Sampath. The Congress-JD(S) alliance elected Padmavathi Narasimha Murthy of Rajagopala Nagara ward as the deputy mayor with 138 votes in her support.

Although several ministers and leaders from the Congress had earlier come up with their favorite candidates for the poll, the backing of Ministers likes DK Shivakumar, KJ George, Ramalinga Reddy and Dr HC Mahadevappa helped Sampath Raj gain a majority in the council.

5) Hardik Pandya’s Six Hits 24-Year-Old Fan

It was a sixer straight on the face, literally, for 24-year-old Tosit Agarwal. As the stadium erupted in jubilation as Hardik Pandya hit a six during the India-Australia One Day International at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the ball landed on the face of Tosit in the P1 stand.

Soon after being hit, he was taken to the medical centre in the stadium where first aid was administered. He was later taken to HOSMAT hospital where his wounds were sutured. “He got a cut just below his lower lip, lower teeth and his tongue,” said Ajit Benedict Royan, vice-president, HOSMAT Hospital. He was given a pain-killer.

6) Ex-MP's Grandson Crashes Car Into Van; Drugs Seized

A 27-year-old man was arrested after his speeding Mercedes Benz car hit a Maruti Omni van, injuring six people, including three children. The police found 110 gram of marijuana in his car and a separate case has also been registered against him under the NDPS Act.

The suspect has been identified as Vishnu Naidu, a resident of Jayanagar I Block.
He is the grandson of businessman and former MP from Chittor, the late D K Audikesavulu. The police said the accident happened around 12.30 am on Thursday at Southend Circle in Jayanagar. Vishnu, who was in an inebriated state, was speeding in his Benz car and hit the van. The front end of the car was damaged. The driver, two women and three children in the van were injured.
