PK Mishra: An Economics Major is the New Principal Secy to PM Modi

Pramod Kumar Mishra was appointed as the principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, 11 September, replacing Nripendra Misra who stepped down from the post last month.

Mishra, a 1972 batch IAS officer, was already serving as the additional principal secretary since June 2014. Mishra was reappointed after the BJP came back to power in May.

BEGAN CAREER AS ASSISTANT COLLECTOR

Mishra started his career as an assistant collector in 1974. He held his first job for two years till 1976, when he was given the position of a District Development Officer, which he served till 1978.

After his stint as the Development Officer, Mishra became a collector from Banaskantha in Gujarat. However, he held the position for only three months, before he was appointed as the Social Justice, Welfare and Empowerment Project Administrator.

Mishra was first appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary with the Ministry of Finance’s Revenue Department, a position he held till 2000.

He has also served the Ministry of Urban Development as an additional principal secretary for about four months, from May till September 2004.

AN ECONOMICS MAJOR, SASAKAWA AWARDEE

According to his Wikipedia page, Mishra has a bachelor’s degree in Economics, a masters in Economics and a PhD in Economics / Development Studies from the University of Sussex in England.

Mishra was born in August 1948, in Odisha’s Sambalpur. United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on 17 May 2019 conferred Mishra with the prestigious Sasakawa Award 2019 for Disaster Risk Reduction.
