Pregnant Dalit Woman Beaten by Gujarat Police, Sparks Protests

A pregnant Dalit woman, who is a sanitation worker was beaten up by the Gujarat police while agitating outside Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) demanding permanency in job on Monday. The victim is said to be seriously injured and has been taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

According to reports, under the banner of Jan Sangharsh Manch and Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, a demonstration was planned for women’s labour rights.

The Dalit groups are allegedly planning Ahmedabad bandh on Tuesday.

Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani who has been detained several times this month for fighting for Dalit rights in Gujarat, also posted the incident on his Facebook page.
