At least ten civilians, including two minors, were killed and 38 others injured in heavy cross-border shelling by Pakistani forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. This closely follows India’s targeted missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The shelling began late Tuesday night and continued into the early hours of Wednesday, striking several villages within the Poonch district. According to officials cited by the Jammu and Kashmir News Service (JKNS), multiple houses were destroyed or severely damaged, adding that many of the injured are in critical condition.

The injured were rushed to the district hospital in Poonch, where emergency teams are monitoring their conditions. Among the victims were two personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), injured when a shell exploded near a bus stand in Poonch town, as reported by The Indian Express.

The shelling has resulted in immense panic and displacement in border villages. Local authorities launched evacuation efforts and set up emergency shelters. “Relief efforts are ongoing and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of civilians,” a district official told JKNS.

Civilian life was further disrupted as authorities ordered the closure of schools and colleges across five border districts- Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch. Airports in Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh suspended operations due to heightened tensions. Air India cancelled flights to and from these cities, while other airlines issued advisories and diverted northern routes.

The escalation follows India’s launch of Operation Sindoor, a military operation that targeted nine terror sites inside Pakistan and Pok. The Indian Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile strikes hit locations linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke.

“Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature,” the ministry stated, adding that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted.

In response, Pakistani forces initiated artillery shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB). said

“During the early hours of 7th May, Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing, including artillery shelling from posts across the LoC and IB opposite Jammu and Kashmir.”
Lt Colonel Suneel Baratwal, spokesperson for the Indian Army’s Northern Command.

The Indian Army responded to the shelling in what it described as a ‘calibrated manner,’ and has further accused Pakistan of violating the 2021 ceasefire agreement.
