#GoodNews: Indian Army Gets First Woman Lt Colonel From Arunachal

Ponung Doming, an Army official from Arunachal Pradesh, created history when she became the first woman officer from the state to hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.

She was elevated from the post of Army Major on Monday, 23 September.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to Twitter to share the “proud moment.”

Earlier in August, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami has become the first female officer in the country to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit.

Flight Commander is the second in the command of the unit.

Dhami, who has been serving the air force for 15 years, has been flying choppers. She became the first woman flying instructor of the air force and is also the first woman officer to get permanent commission of the flying branch. 

Women are recruited in the armed forces are only in the officer's rank.

The army has 3.80 percent of women officers, the navy has six percent and the air force has the highest 13 percent, said the Centre in the reply to the Lok Sabha in December 2018.
