Five people have so far been detained in Assam's Kamrup district after a mob of over 500 men allegedly tried to force woman dancers of a troupe to strip during a cultural programme.

Two men were arrested on Sunday, 9 June, after a case was filed in the matter, reported news agency PTI. On Monday, The Hindustan Times reported that three more have been detained in the case.

“Six people who organised the event, and are named in the FIR, are absconding. Our investigations are underway and we will arrest them soon,” the report quoted Rupam Hazarika, in-charge of Chaygaon police station, as saying.

The FIR in the case was filed by the Rainbow Dance Group of Boko after six girls of the group were allegedly forced to perform naked.

According to the FIR, the troupe was forcibly taken to an area enclosed with tin sheets where the mob 'pulled at their dresses' and 'urged them to dance naked', the report said.

According to the Hindustan Times, The incident has caused communal tension as well since the organisers are said to belong to a minority community and the dancers are from the indigenous tribes of the state.

The event was apparently organised as a part of post-Eid celebration and the organisers had sold tickets at very high rates claiming that the troupe was coming from Coochbehar in West Bengal to perform strip dances.
