The West Bengal government said on Tuesday that it has removed Sarbani Roy from the post of Special Public Prosecutor in all its cases, saying that she went beyond her jurisdiction and acted without consulting the government in the Park Street rape case.

Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said this in the Assembly while speaking on the West Bengal Advocates Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2015, which was passed in the House. Though the decision had been announced by the state government earlier, the minister said it in the House clarifying a query by an opposition member.

The minister had earlier said that Roy had went beyond her jurisdiction in pleading with the judge that the degree of punishment for the convicted be “kept to minimum”.

The prosecution counsel had told the court that the convicts were not directly involved in the commission of the crime and that they be sentenced according to statute. The minister said the government had given no instruction to the government counsel in this regard.
