Not Worthy: Pak PM, as Pakistanis Demand Nobel Peace Prize for Him

“Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.”

That’s what many Pakistanis are demanding on Twitter, some are even signing an online petition for the same.

However, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter and said that he is “not worthy of the Nobel Prize.”

The demand comes in the backdrop of the Indian Air Force Pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s return to India from Pakistan after being captured on 27 February.

On Saturday, 2 March, a resolution was submitted in the Pakistan Parliament to endorse Khan for the Peace Prize for his efforts to de-escalate tensions, reported PTI.

The resolution is expected to be taken up on Monday when it is scheduled to convene its session. According to PTI, it is also expected to be passed as the government has majority in the House, but it will be interesting to see if main Opposition parties support the move.

After India targeted terror camps in Pakistan on 26 February, Pakistan targeted “Indian military posts” a day later amid the already heightened tensions between the two nations over the Pulwama attack. Varthaman was captured by Pakistan on 27 February in the process.

A day after his capture, Khan announced in the Pakistan Parliament that the country will release Varthaman as a “peace gesture” to de-escalate tensions between the two nations. Here are some tweets praising Khan and sharing the petition.
