Pakistan’s victory over India in the ICC Champions Trophy Final on Sunday left many Indians disappointed and also led to a case of sour grapes, where some Indians resorted to slandering the winning team.

A tweet claiming that Indian Muslims were celebrating Pakistan’s win, showing a video of what appeared to be fans bearing the flag of Pakistan, went viral on Monday. Here is what Twitter user Sonam Mahajan tweeted:

The video, which went viral on social media, especially on Twitter and Whatsapp, instigated much hate speech and jingoism, with some derogatory remarks about India’s neighbour doing the rounds:

SMHoaxSlayer pointed out that neither was the flag shown in the video that of Pakistan, nor was the so-called celebration one of Pakistan’s victory. The website, which debunks fake news, also clarified:

This video dates back to March 2017, and was certainly not recorded on Sunday. The flag shown in the video is not of Pakistan but of Islam. The Pakistani flag also features a white vertical stripe.

SMHoaxSlayer also clarified that the video had not been recorded in West Bengal as was being widely claimed.

First-time Champions Trophy winners Pakistan beat India by a whopping 180 runs at The Oval, London, on Sunday. This is Pakistan’s first victory in an ICC event since their 2009 World T20 win.

Even as Pakistan’s captain Sarfraz Ahmed led his team to victory, the match turned out to be nightmarish for India under Virat Kohli's captaincy. It was a match where everything went awry for the ‘Men in Blue', right from the time Kohli went out for the toss.
