The entry of foreign tourists to the entire Union Territory (UT) has been banned as a precautionary measure in view of the coronavirus outbreak around the world, ANI reported, quoting the Government of Jammu & Kashmir.
Earlier, an 18-year-old with travel history to the United Kingdom was tested positive in West Bengal, making it the state’s first case, reported ANI.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday, 17 March announced the total number of COVID-19 cases in India has risen to 137. The death toll from the virus also increased to three on Tuesday.
Dr Balram Bhargava, Director-General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), addressed the media on Tuesday, 17 March. He said that India has 72 functional labs for secondary testing of COVID-19 and about 50 labs will start testing by the end of this week.

2 People Test Positive in Karnataka's Kalburgi and Bengaluru
Two people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Karnataka's Kalburgi and Bengaluru, the state Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Monday, 16 March.
"Both patients are quarantined and treated at isolation facilities," he further said.
US Begins First Human Trial of Coronavirus Vaccine: Statement
The first human trial to evaluate a candidate vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 has begun in Seattle, US health officials said Monday, 16 March, according to AFP.
"The open-label trial will enroll 45 healthy adult volunteers aged 18 to 55 years over approximately 6 weeks," the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) said in a statement.
"The first participant received the investigational vaccine today," it added.
Coronavirus Outbreak: Taj Mahal Closed to Visitors From Today
The Taj Mahal will be closed for tourists from Tuesday, 17 February, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Officials said that the decision was communicated to them on Monday night by the Ministry of Tourism in New Delhi.
Most schools and entertainment facilities, including cinemas, have already been closed across India which has reported 114 positive cases and two deaths from the virus.

Deputy director of the institute Prof Manindra Agarwal, said, “The institute administration suspects that the spread of the virus will increase over the next week or two. To avoid such a scenario in which a large number of students will have to be vacated with shortage of transport facilities, we have sought a gradual reduction of students in the hostels.”

The main Tibetan temple here has been closed for public in view of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the office of the Dalai Lama said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
"In view of the coronavirus 'COVID-19' outbreak as well as a precautionary measures by various Indian government including the imposition of section 144 by Kangra district administration, the main Tibetan temple (Tsuglhakhang) will be closed from tomorrow (Wednesday) until 15 April subject to further notice," the office of the Dalai Lama said in a statement.
Pakistan Reports First COVID-19 Death; Cases Surge to 193
Pakistan reported its first casualty due to the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, health ministry officials said as the number of positive cases of the COVID-19 infections rose to 193 in the country, reported PTI.
The first fatality was reported from Lahore. Meanwhile, Sindh has 155 positive cases, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 15, Balochistan 10, Gilgit-Baltistan 5, Islamabad 2 and Punjab 6, officials said.

Rajasthan Bans All 50 Plus Gathering in Public Places Till 31March
The Rajasthan government on Tuesday banned all gatherings at public places exceeding 50 people till March 31 to fight the coronavirus outbreak, said an official statement, reported PTI.
The ban was imposed as per directions of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot who decided to resort to the precautionary measure after a high-level meeting on late Monday night to take stock of the situation, the statement added.
The ban will be in force till March 31 after which the situation will be reviewed and appropriate decision taken, it added.
Upcoming Polls to Maha Local Bodies Postponed
The Maharashtra State Election Commission on Tuesday deferred the upcoming elections to local bodies in the state till further orders as a precautionary measure to check the spread of the novel coronavirus, reported PTI.
The election commission also stayed the poll-related process.
"As per a Bombay High Court order dated 10 August 2005, the SEC has powers to postpone elections in view of natural calamity or a sudden situation. Accordingly, the SEC has stayed the process of ward delimitation, voter list (updation) and other activities related to elections from today (Tuesday) onwards," Madan said.

Himachal Closes Govt-Run Temples Over COVID-19; Advises Devotees to Go for Online Darshan
The Himachal Pradesh government on Tuesday advised people to shun darshan of deities at temples in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic which has infected over 100 people in the country, reported PTI.
“There will be no darshans in all the government-controlled temples in Himachal Pradesh in view of the possibility of people getting infected with the coronavirus in gatherings,” the state government said in a statement.
Under this, three Shaktipeeths -- mother Jwalamukhi, mother Bajreshwari Kangra and mother Chamunda -- of Kangra have been closed from Tuesday.

All ministries have been asked to install thermal scanners at all government buildings in wake of COVID-19 outbreak in the country, reported PTI, quoting an official order.

Ford Asks 10,000 Employees in India to Work From Home
US auto major Ford has asked its 10,000 employees in India, except those in business-critical roles, to work from home with similar steps being taken by Swedish luxury car maker Volvo and Fiat Chrysler India in the wake coronavirus pandemic, reported PTI.
A Ford India spokesperson said, in recent days, the company has concluded that the issue of coronavirus has taken on a different dimension.
"Therefore, starting Monday March 16, we have instructed much of our India workforce (over 10,000 people) including Ford India and Global Business Services - except those in business-critical roles that cannot be done away from Ford facilities – to work remotely until further notice," the spokesperson said.
IAF Airmen Recruitment Test Postponed
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheduled test for Airmen Recruitment planned to be held in 86 cities from 19 -23 March has been postponed tentatively to the last week of April this year, reported ANI, quoting Air Force spokesperson Group Captain Anupam Banerjee.
Private NABL-Accredited Labs Will Soon Be Operational for COVID-19 Tests: ICMR
There are 72 functional Indian Council of Medical Research laboratories conducting tests for coronavirus and private NABL-accredited labs will soon be operational across the country, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava on Tuesday said, reported PTI.
He also appealed to all private laboratories to offer COVID-19 diagnosis free of cost.
"We have 72 functional ICMR laboratories in government sector for testing and 49 more will be active by the month end," he said.
Bhargava said that India was in stage 2 or local transmission of the virus.
"All asymptomatic patients who have taken international flights in the past 14 days should get tested as per current protocol if they develop symptoms," he said.
GoAir Suspends International Operations
Indian low-cost airline GoAir on Tuesday, 17 March, announced in a statement that it is suspending all its international operations and will be sending its employees on leave without pay on a rotational basis amid limited operations due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, reported PTI.
Two COVID-19 Cases at World Health HQ
Two cases of COVID-19 have been registered at the World Health Organisation headquarters, a spokesman said on Tuesday, reported AFP.
The WHO, based in the Swiss city of Geneva, is coordinating the international response to the new coronavirus pandemic, which has infected more than 180,000 people and killed more than 7,000 across 145 countries.
"We do have two staff confirmed with symptoms of COVID-19," spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters at a virtual press conference.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday reviewed the level of preparedness to contain novel coronavirus threat with states bordering Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The home secretary urged all officials to ensure that round the clock deployment of doctors, with requisite testing kits and other medical supplies, be done so that 100 per cent screening is done without fail, the statement said.

The World Health Organisation on Tuesday recommended that people suffering from COVID-19-like symptoms should avoid self-medicating with ibuprofen, after French authorities warned anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen the effects of the virus, reported PTI.
"In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That's important," he said.
Museums, Monuments Shut for Visitors in MP
The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday ordered the closure of all archaeological museums and state protected monuments till further notice due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, reported PTI.
While the entry of visitors to museums and monuments will be banned till further order, staff must remain present on duty, Pankaj Rag, Commissioner of Archaeology Archives and Museums said.
Telangana Cancels Vistor Meetings of Jail Inmates
The Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services on Tuesday said visitor meetings of prisoners at all jails in the state have been cancelled in view of the coronavirus threat, reported PTI.
As part of precautionary measures 'mulaqats' of prisoners with visitors has been cancelled in all jails in Telangana with immediate effect to reduce movement and exposure of inmates to ensure social distancing and for maintaining their proper hygienic condition and safety in prisons, an official release said.
"They may avail telephone facility and e-mulaqats to talk with inmates until lifting of the restrictions," the release said.

MSRTC Takes Rs 3-Crore Hit Due to Cancellation of Services
State-run transport body MSRTC has suffered a loss of over Rs 3 crore due to cancellation of nearly 21,000 bus services since 11 March in view of the coronavirus outbreak in Maharashtra and low occupancy, said officials on Tuesday, reported PTI.
Of these, 9,262 services were cancelled on 16 March alone, causing a loss of Rs 1.28 crore to the corporation, he said.
Overall, the corporation has suffered a loss of Rs 3.17 crore due to cancellation of services since 11 March, the spokesperson said.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) regional office for Europe on Tuesday said there is a need for bold measures in all European countries, calling the continent the "epicentre" of the new coronavirus pandemic, reported AFP.

DGCA Asks Airlines to Disinfect Planes Every 24 Hrs, Place Hand Sanitisers in Lavatories
Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday asked airlines to disinfect and deep-clean each plane at least once in 24 hours and place hand sanitizers in lavatories and galleys of each aircraft in view of coronavirus pandemic, reported PTI.
The regulator has stated that airlines must provide crew members with personal protective equipment like masks and gloves "in sufficient quantity" for use during interaction with passengers.

The Gujarat government has banned entry to tourists at Statue of Unity in Kevadia town of Narmada district till 25 March and also directed hotels and restaurants to avoid hosting large functions, reported ANI.

Air India to Suspend Flights to Europe, UK From 19 March
Air India on Tuesday announced temporary suspension of its entire services to Europe and the UK from 19 March.
The decision to suspend air services to the UK and the European Union member countries was taken in the wake of travel and visa restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak, Air India said in a tweet.
The airline flies to London and Brimingham in the UK, and Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Vienna, Stockholm and Copenhagen in Europe.
People Quarantined in 3 Delhi Hotels Will Have to Pay Charges
People availing quarantine facilities at three private hotels- Lemon Tree, Red Fox, IBIS - identified by the Delhi government in the wake of coronavirus outbreak will have to pay charges, official orders said.
The people showing symptoms of coronavirus and those coming from COVID-19 hit countries have to undergo compulsory quarantine for 14 days.
According to three separate orders issued by New Delhi District Magistrate Tanvi Garg, people using quarantine facilities at these three hotels will have to pay Rs 3100, excluding taxes, per day.
The facilities to be provided in such hotels include three meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - two water bottles, tea or coffee and other services such as Wi-Fi and television.

A 62-year-old man has died of the coronavirus in Sao Paulo, Brazil, becoming the South American country's first death from the pandemic, local officials said on Tuesday, reported AFP.

No Need for Biometric Identification at Ration Shops: Bhujba
Buyers do not need to give finger impressions on Point of Sale (PoS) machines at Public Distribution System (PDS) shops in view of the coronavirus threat, the Maharashtra government said on Tuesday. reported PTI.
"The beneficiaries need not give finger impressions on (Aadhar-enabled) E-PoS machines at ration shop. It will help avoid spread of virus infection," Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said.
“Buyers can be given tokens and allotted time slots for making purchases instead of making them queue up, the minister said. If queues are formed, it should be ensured that people stand at appropriate distance from each other,” he added.

Railways has cancelled 85 trains as precaution against the spread of coronavirus and due to low occupancy, officials said on Tuesday.
It has also issued a set of guidelines to zonal railways for its catering staff stating no employee having fever, cough, runny nose or difficulty in breathing "should be deployed in the business of food handling on Indian Railways".
According to officials, central railways cancelled 23 trains, south central railways cancelled 29 trains, western railways cancelled 10 trains, south eastern railways cancelled 9 trains, east coast and northern railways cancelled 5 trains each, and north western railways cancelled 4 trains.

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary to furnish an affidavit on measures being taken by the state government to control coronavirus.
The court also directed the principal secretary and the director general of the Medical and Health Department to file a detailed affidavit in this regard within a week and posted the matter for hearing on 30 March.
Indigo Cancels Flights on Delhi-Istanbul, Chennai-Kuala Lumpur Route From18-31 March
IndiGo announced on Tuesday that as aviation regulator DGCA has restricted international traffic from Turkey and Malaysia, it will be cancelling its flights on Delhi-Istanbul route and Chennai-Kuala Lumpur route from 18 March to 31 March.
"These are purely temporary and precautionary measures. We understand that these measures will cause inconvenience to our customers and we will be refunding the full amount to the impacted passengers," the airline stated in a press release.
24-Hr Quarantine for All International Travelers to Pune
All passengers landing at the Pune airport from foreign destinations will be put in hospital quarantine for 24 hours irrespective of whether they have any symptoms of coronavirus, a senior official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
He also warned of stern action if those put in home quarantine violate the norms and mingle in public.
The city has had seven confirmed cases of coronavirus while the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad has reported ten cases. The latest case came to light on Tuesday.

DBS Bank India on Tuesday said it has tied-up with Bharti AXA to roll out a complimentary insurance plan covering all medical conditions, including COVID-19, reported PTI.

CSIR-IICT Ties up With Cipla to Develop COVID-19 Drug
Hyderabad-based CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) has tied up with pharmaceutical giant Cipla to work on development of anti- viral drugs to contain COVID-19.
Research on anti-viral drugs has been on throughout the world for long and many companies have developed molecules having anti-viral properties. But due to lack of demand, these molecules were not widely marketed, according to IICT sources.
However, the CSIR-IICT decided to work on three such molecules -- remdesivir, favipiravir and baloxavir. Cipla urged the IICT director S Chandrasekhar to start work on these molecules on an immediate basis.

A resident of Mahe, who arrived at Calicut International Airport on 13 March, onboard Etihad Airways (EY 250) from Abhu Dhabi has been confirmed with COVID-19, reported ANI, quoting Seeram Sambasiva Rao, Kozhikode District Collector.
“Passengers of this flight residing in Calicut should immediately contact the District Control Room and should strictly be in house quarantine,” Rao said.
