Shashi Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, questioned the meagre focus on job creation in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s maiden budget. He added that the Union Budget 2019 serves no purpose for the aam aadmi (common people).

“This government’s budget does nothing to either create jobs or give money in people’s hands.”

He remarked, “Tourism sector has immense potential of job creation because it hires many semi-skilled and unskilled labour. There have been no concessions in these sectors.”

He said that the Budget does not talk about resources needed to train people for the health and the education sectors.

He added that the Budget is doesn’t serve the common man as increasing petrol and diesel prices will have an adverse effect. He raised questions about why the finance minister did not mention GDP growth even though the Economic Survey presented on Thursday, 4 July, had predicted a growth of 7%.
