This timeline is from The Quint’s archives. It has been re-posted to mark three years since the death of the December 16 gangrape victim, Jyoti Singh.

The brutal gangrape of Jyoti Singh, popularly called Nirbhaya, on 16 December 2012 led to widespread calls across India for sweeping changes in the way we treat sex crimes. Jyoti succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on 29 December 2012. Three years on, precious little has changed. Lest we forget, here’s a timeline of the incident that shook India.

It is now three years since the incident. While four of the six convicts received the death penalty, a fifth was found hanged in Tihar Jail in March 2013. The sixth, who was then a minor, is set to be released after his three-year sentence.
