US Won’t Tolerate Pakistan Becoming a Terrorist Haven: Nikki Haley

The United States Ambassador to United Nations, Nikki Haley, on Thursday, 28 June, said that while her country valued Pakistan as a partner, it “cannot tolerate the country becoming a haven for terrorists.”

Haley, who is on a two-day visit to New Delhi, said both India and the US share the commitment to defeat terrorism.

Speaking at an Observer Research Foundation event in the capital, Haley said India was “widely respected” despite holding nuclear capabilities.

The US values Pakistan as a partner but we cannot tolerate the state becoming a haven for terrorists and hope to see a change. On the other hand, India holds nuclear capabilities as well but is widely respected because it is a responsible democracy.

Trump-Modi Share Vision for Indo-Pacific Region

Haley added that US President Donald Trump shared Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for free and open Indo-Pacific region. The ambassador commented that Haley’s vision was both “aspirational and realistic.”

‘We Believe in Legal Immigration’

Speaking about the deportation of illegal immigrants from the US, Haley said their country cannot have illegal immigrants “when terrorism is starting to be predominantly around.”

‘Indians Treat Me Like Their Own’

Haley said she begins all her speeches by mentioning that she was the daughter of Indian immigrants, and that she was proud of Indians’ work ethic and deep love.

Indians have treated me like one of their own. As Governor, I would begin all my speeches by mentioning that I am the daughter of Indian immigrants. The work ethic and deep love for education amongst Indians makes me proud.

‘The US-India Relationship Has Grown’

Haley elaborated that the relationship between India and the US has changed over time, from indifference to mutual suspicion to friendship and partnership.

US-India relationship has grown from indifference & mutual suspicion to friendship & partnership. Today, Indian Americans are the most educated & highly philanthropic minority in US.

She added that India and the US also share the freedom of religion.

“One of the most important and crucial things that India and the US share is freedom of religion. Our nations can only be held together with tolerance and respect,” said Haley.
