Nagrota Attack: CCTV Cameras, Afzal Guru & Other Key Developments

Jammu region was rocked by two terror attacks on Tuesday in which seven army personnel, including two Major-rank officers, were killed and eight other security men, including a BSF DIG, were injured, before six heavily-armed terrorists were killed in separate fierce encounters.

In one incident, a group of heavily-armed terrorists in police uniform stormed an army unit in Nagrota, about three kms from the Corps headquarters on the outskirts of Jammu city, triggering an intense gun-battle that lasted hours.

Here are the latest updates from the investigation.

  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to probe the twin terror attacks in Nagrota and Samba in Jammu and Kashmir in which seven army personnel were killed. (PTI)
  • The body of Naik Chittaranjan Debbarma was brought to Tripura on Thursday for cremation on Friday, which will take place with full state honours in his village. Debbarma is survived by his wife Namita, aged parents and two children aged 11 and 7 years. (IANS)
  • The Ministry of External Affairs has said it is awaiting certain details about the Nagrota attack before it can ascertain what the next step will be. (ANI)
  • The MEA also said the incident is being taken very seriously and the government will do what is feels is required for national security. (PTI)

  • Last rites of Nagrota martyr Hawildar Sukhraj Singh were held with full state honours in his home town of Batala. He is survived by wife Harmeet Kaur, mother Swanjeet Kaur, elder brother Dhanrah Singh, seven-year-old daughter Subhpreet and five-year-old son Sargundev Singh. (PTI)
  • Nagrota hero, Major Akshay Girish Kumar was paid the final salute in his hometown Bengaluru. He’s survived by his wife, Sangeeta, and three-year-old daughter, Naina. (CNN-News18)
  • Combing operations in Nagrota resumed for the third day, on Thursday. Mortal remains of Major Gosavi Kunal Mannadir, one of the officers who lost his life in the attack, were brought to his hometown in Pandharpur. (ANI)
  • According to reports, a note, along with three AK-47 rifles, magazines and UBGL grenades, recovered from the site of attack, points to the involvement of JeM's Afzal Guru Squad. The note, written in Urdu, says that they have avenged the death of Guru. (PTI)
  • BSF officials said there is "ample proof" and indication to say that the militants involved in the Samba attack crawled through a tunnel to reach this side of the border. BSF DG KK Sharma said the Nagrota attack was “separate” and it was part of the investigation to find out if it had any connection with the Samba terror bid. (PTI)
  • Sixteen CCTV cameras at a toll plaza in Jammu could have provided important clues about the movement of the terrorists. However, they had been switched off weeks ago when toll-collection stopped after the demonetisation policy. (The Indian Express)
  • There were possibly four terrorists and one of the three killed was involved in the Uri attacks. The terrorist who was involved in the Uri attack reportedly supplied the police uniforms and information regarding the Army base to Nagrota attackers. (CNN-News18)
  • Security agencies suggested that the militants may have been in cahoots with local sympathisers and had been in and around the target area before the attack took place. The investigation remained inconclusive about how the attackers got there, who ferried them or what route was taken. (The Hindu)
  • The Army denied that there were specific intelligence inputs prior to the terror attack. It, however, conceded that there may have been lapses in ensuring proper perimeter security of the camp. (Times of India)
  • Rajya Sabha remained in distress over the twin attacks in Nagrota and Samba. The opposition demanded obituary references for the martyrs, arguing that they had not been honoured in Parliament. (The Quint)
  • Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh visited Nagrota army base on Wednesday and was briefed about the terror attack, even as combing operations to flush out any remaining militants continued. (PTI)
