1. Mumbai Gets 2,117.8 mm Rain, Covers 91% of Season Average

With almost two months to go for the monsoon to end, Mumbai surpassed the 2,000 mm rainfall mark and has so far covered 91.4 percent of the season’s average rain.

The Santacruz weather observatory, representative of Mumbai, has recorded 2,117.8 mm rain from 1 to Friday, 2 August, 8:30 pm. The season’s average rainfall, from June to September, in Mumbai is 2,317.1 mm.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau issued a ‘red alert’ (extremely heavy rain) warning for Sunday for Mumbai and for Saturday and Sunday for Thane and Palghar.

2. Plea in HC to Convert Elevated Metro 4 Line into Underground Corridor

A Thane-based NGO has approached the Bombay High Court to convert the elevated Metro 4 corridor, passing from Wadala to Kasarvadavali in Thane, into an underground one.

The petition, moved by NGO Thane Nagrik Pratishtan and activist Rohit Joshi, seeks to revoke the implementation of the proposed elevated Metro 4 line by directing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the state to instead plan an underground line with a viable alignment.

3. Shiv Sena Praises CM Devendra Fadnavis for Not Allowing Tainted Leaders Into BJP

The Shiv Sena on Friday lauded Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis’s decision to keep leaders who are facing serious charges, like Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Chhagan Bhujbal, away from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at a time when speculation about Bhujbal joining the Sena is rife.

After four sitting Opposition legislators joined the BJP earlier in the week, Fadnavis said there is no vacancy in the party and assured that leaders who are under the scanner of investigating agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will not be inducted in the BJP.

4. Seven Arrested for Abducting, Extorting Money from Mumbai Man

Seven men were arrested on Friday for allegedly abducting a 30-year-old real estate agent in Mumbai’s Mahim area and extorting money from him.

The real estate agent, Harshal Manjarekar, was abducted on July 23 and was let go the same day after his driver handed the accused cash and jewellery worth Rs 13 lakh, said the police. Manjarekar filed a complaint with the police last Sunday, five days after the incident.

5. Compound Wall Collapses in Dadar; Two Women Rescued by Fire Brigade

In another incident that took place on Friday due to heavy rains in Mumbai, a compound wall collapsed near Kismat Cinema in Prabhadevi, Dadar. A team of Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), local police, BMC ward staff, and an ambulance immediately reached the spot and carried out rescue operations.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade team safely rescued two women. The rescue operation is underway to see if more people are trapped under the debris.
