1. Maharashtra Gives A Push To Roads And Rural Infrastructure
With an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government’s interim budget for 2019-20 focused on infrastructure development in rural Maharashtra.
The government has allocated major outlays for road projects, development of airports in tier-II cities, modernisation of state transport corporation’s bus stands and adding buses, among others.

2. Border Trouble: Security Beefed Up In City
With tensions simmering on both sides of the Indo-Pakistan border, the Mumbai Police have stepped up security across the city since Tuesday.
Police sources said that Mumbai, being the financial capital and due to its diverse population, is regarded to be one of the top targets for terrorist attacks. As a result, precautions are being taken accordingly, sources said.
“Briefings have been held at all police stations and units, and police personnel have been instructed to conduct combing operations, random checks, nakabandi and intelligence-gathering exercises round the clock. Patrolling units are putting particular focus on sensitive installations and teams have been assigned to visit hotels and lodges so that they can check the bona fides of the guests staying there,” a senior officer with the Mumbai Police said.

3. Govt On Maratha Quota: ‘No Jobs For Graduates, Postgraduates’
The state government on Wednesday told the Bombay High Court that the objective of granting 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community is to promote them in service and education, as graduate and post-graduates are without jobs in this country.
The state government began arguments on three petitions filed by advocates Jaishri Patil, Sanjeet Shukla and Dr Uday Dhople, along with others, challenging a notification published by the Government of Maharashtra on November 30, 2018, to provide 16 per cent reservation to members of the Maratha community in government jobs and educational institutions.

4. Shakti Mills Gang Rape Case: ‘Law Amended, Punishment Enhanced To Prevent Rape’
The central government on Wednesday told the Bombay high court (HC) the rape law was amended in 2013 and punishment was enhanced in order to prevent the crime.
“The state and society have the responsibility to not just punish criminals, but also prevent crimes,” additional solicitor general Anil Singh argued, in response to a petition filed by three convicts sentenced to death in the Shakti Mill gang rape case.

5. Like Delhi, Maharashtra To Get Mohalla Clinics For Primary Healthcare
Taking cue from the success of mohalla clinics in Delhi, the brainchild of the AAP government, the BJP-led government has approved at least 60 such clinics for slums across the state, where private doctors will be roped in to provide healthcare facilities to the urban poor.
The proposal has been approved under the National Health Mission (NHM), at an initial budget of Rs 3 crore, senior health officials told The Indian Express.
