1. H1N1 Flu on the Rise, 309 Cases in Mumbai

Even as dengue and leptospirosis cases have been in check in Mumbai due to delayed monsoon, cases of H1N1 infection, commonly referred as swine flu, have surged to 36 within a fortnight in July this year, against zero cases reported during the month last year.

So far, a total of 1,772 H1N1 flu cases and 191 deaths have been recorded across Maharashtra this year, officials said.

According to data from the civic health department, there were a staggering 3,029 H1N1 flu cases in Mumbai in 2015, which dropped to just three in 2016 and again rose to 995 in 2017.

The Bombay high court (HC) on Monday paved the way for herbal hookah bars in the city after it clarified that no action can be taken against an establishment for serving tobacco-free hookah.

A division bench of justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre was hearing a petition filed by architect-turned-restaurateur Ali Reza Abdi. He sought a declaration that the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, under which hookah is banned, is not applicable to tobacco-free herbal hookah, and authorities cannot take coercive action against him if he starts serving herbal hookah at his chain of rooftop restaurants — Sheesha Skylounge.

3. Four Cops Suspended for Inaction Over Dance Bar Norms

Four police personnel from Kasturba Marg police station in Borivli (East) were suspended on Monday for allegedly failing to act against at least five dance bars, which flouted the guidelines.

The suspension order of the four personnel — senior inspector Sanjeev Pimple, inspector Abantrao Hake, sub-inspector Chetak Gange and head constable Shivaji Chakne — reportedly came from the new additional commissioner of north region, Dilip Sawant, who took charge over a month ago. Deputy commissioner of police of zone 11, Vinay Rathod, confirmed the development.

A day after a mob assaulted three resident doctors in BYL Nair hospital following the death of their relative, one accused was sent to judicial custody on Monday.

Gajendra Jain was arrested by Agripada police and produced in court on Monday.

On Sunday evening, Jain along with other relatives ransacked the hospital ward and attacked three resident doctors, Dr Dipali Patil, Dr Moiz Vora and Dr Gaurav Gunjan, following the death of their relative Rajkishore Dixit (50).

5. 130 Shops Restored At Crawford Market

Standing in the heart of South Mumbai for 150 years, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market, popularly known as Crawford market, continues to be a favourite among city’s shoppers, especially those looking for bulk purchases.

While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken restoration works in phases – restoring a total of 130 shops in the first phase last year – work on the remaining 265 shops that commenced in December 2017, is on, officials from the civic body’s market department said.
