MT Genessa Oil Tanker Fire: 2 Crew Members Suffer Burn Injuries

The oil tanker was carrying 30,000 tonnes of high-speed diesel when the fire broke out.

Three ICG Vessels, 9 Tugs from KPT, Reliance, Essar, Adani & ICG Dornier were employed to put out the blaze.

The fire that broke out on the MT Genessa oil tanker on Wednesday, 17 January, has been doused. The blaze broke out on the oil tanker, carrying 30,000 tonnes of high-speed diesel, off the Gujarat coast at around 6 pm – when the vessel was anchored 15 nautical miles off Deendayal Port Kandla.

A total of 26 crew members were rescued from the tanker. According to reports, two members sustained burn injuries in the blaze.

The blaze broke out on the oil tanker that was carrying 30,000 tonnes of high-speed diesel.

The Ministry of Defence had earlier said that Samudra-class Pollution Control Vessel was overseeing the operations of the oil tanker fire incident, ANI reported.

Three ICG Vessels, nine tugs from KPT, Reliance, Essar, Adani & ICG Dornier were pressed into service to douse the flames.

A spokesperson had earlier said that an Indian Coast Guard Interceptor Boat C-403 was the scene and the maritime security agency's pollution control team had been activated. However, he couldn’t confirm whether oil spilled into the sea. Water sampling of the ocean showed no sign of oil spilling, the Gujarat Defence Ministry said. The Coast Guard were likely to cordon the vessel to avoid oil spillage, ANI reported.
