Mohit Goel, founder of Ringing Bells that offered the world's “cheapest smartphone” 'Freedom 251', and two other people were arrested by the police in Delhi on Sunday, 10 June, for allegedly trying to extort money from a businessman to "settle a gang-rape case.”

A partner of Noida-based company Ringing Bells, Goel shot to fame after he announced a smartphone at a price of Rs 251.

Goel, his aide and a woman allegedly conspired to extort money from the complainant after implicating them in a gang-rape case in Rajasthan's Alwar, reported ANI.

Earlier on 6 March, a case was lodged in Alwar district of Rajasthan by the woman who claimed she was raped by five businessmen. The woman had alleged that she was called to attend an event at a hotel, where she was raped. The police had subsequently arrested all the five accused. However, during the investigation it was reportedly found that the complainants were being threatened for money.

According to ANI, the police then laid a trap to arrest the accused when they came to collect the extortion money. The gang had allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore from the businessman for settling the case.

"My relatives were being honey-trapped. First, the accused asked for Rs 11 crore and then they settled the matter for Rs 2.5 crore. They took Rs 1 crore 15 lakh earlier and on Sunday they came to take Rs 30 lakh when they were arrested," a family member of a complainant told ANI.
