Minor Girl Found Hanging in Police Station, Probe Underway

According to the mother of the 17-year-old, their neighbours abducted her to pressure her into marrying their son.

A 17-year-old girl was found hanging in West Delhi's Tilak Vihar police station on the morning of Sunday, 15 July, reported ANI.

Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said that the girl had come to the station in the morning hours of Saturday, and said that she did not wish to return back home.

According to the mother of the deceased, the neighbours had allegedly abducted the minor to pressure her into marrying their son. Speaking to ANI, she said:

Our neighbour abducted her. They wanted their son to marry my daughter but I refused since she was a minor. Police called me here. I saw her hanging in one room and my three sons locked in another room.

The Commissioner told ANI that there was an ongoing dispute between the two families at the police station. At that time, the 17-year-old went into a room at the police station and locked herself. The police found her hanging when they broke open the door.

There was a dispute between the girl’s family and their neighbours. Following this, both the families were called to the police station. A quarrel broke out between the two families at the police station. They were planning to send the girl to Nari Niketan because she refused to go home. Meanwhile, the girl went to the next room and hanged herself.

A sub-inspector and a head constable have been suspended in the case, ANI said in a tweet. Investigation is underway. It will also be ascertained whether there was any negligence on the side of the police present at the scene.
