An admission scam exposed by a retired Mantralaya staffer takes the lid off what is likely to develop into the biggest medical admission scam the country has seen to date.

The revelations by the staffer has seen relevant authorities in Maharashtra expel 17 MBBS students from State and civic medical colleges in Mumbai and Kolhapur.

The students are alleged to have submitted fake caste certificates to avail admission to the government colleges through the SC/ST quota. Police complaints have been filed against the expelled students, reports The Times of India.

The news of the scam has prompted the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to order the verification of all students admitted to the colleges under the SC/ST quota.

The development has also raised fear in the medical fraternity in Mumbai which suspects other students have also used false documents to gain entry into these government-run medical colleges.

The college forwarded all caste certificates to the DMER. The nine Grant Medical College students found guilty of malpractice had claimed that they belonged to a tribal village near Nandurbar in northwest Maharashtra. The Nandurbar district authorities sent a report on Tuesday, identifying nine fake certificates.
