Live: 35 Dead After Bus Falls into Pond in Madhubani, Bihar

Death toll has risen to 35, after a bus travelling from Madhubani to Sitamarhi fell into a gorge in Bihar. The Bihar government has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased persons in the accident.

A bus fell into a 25-foot deep pond in Madhubani district on Monday afternoon. The bus was on its way to Sitamarhi from Madhubani, about 193 kms from Patna.

‘Locals Are Agitated’

According to the police more than 10 bodies have been recovered.

The bodies of four passengers, including a woman, were fished out by the time the report was filed, according to Madhubani district administration sources. According to the ANI, there were about 50 passengers onboard.

Eyewitnesses quoted by Hindustan Times said the driver lost control and the bus plunged into the pond.

Media reports suggest that the locals alleged delayed action by the administration and “resorted to heavy brickbatting that hampered relief operations.”
