Man Tied to Tree, Beaten up for Vandalising Statues of Deities

A man was tied to a tree and beaten by angry locals after he allegedly vandalised two statues of a deity in a temple in Shahgunj, Agra.

A man was tied to a tree and beaten by angry locals after he allegedly vandalised two statues of a deity in a temple in Shahganj, Agra, on Monday, 28 May.

According to The Times of India, the victim, Sonu, was later handed over to the police. Sonu was a daily wage labourer who would ferry water bottles to local residents from a private RO plant.

On Monday morning, he had quarrel with his employer over Rs 50. Later, he vandalised the idols kept inside the temple.

Rajeshwar Tyagi, Station House Officer, Shahaganj, said they would be analysing the video footage of the incident where some angry local residents tied Sonu to a tree and beat him up. His back and face were left injured. Action would be taken against them, he added.

However, Sonu was also booked under Sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police told ANI that Sonu may be intellectually disabled.
