Dear Commissioner of Police (Delhi),

Is this the way your men are supposed to treat women citizens they are paid to protect? Punch her, push her, humiliate her? Are they ignorant of the laws they uphold, or are they simply using these situations as golden opportunities to rough up female students?

During the campus protests at Ramjas college on Wednesday, we witnessed certain policemen brutalising protestors in the confidence that they could do so with impunity. The same policemen, on realising their unconscionable conduct was being recorded by a journalist, attacked The Quint’s cameraman and snatched the equipment.

Despite your men’s best efforts, our cameras managed to capture the unruly behaviour of the Delhi police in (mis)managing the protest outside Maurice Nagar police station near Ramjas college. A scuffle had broken out outside Ramjas college between DU students led by SFI and AISA, and ABVP members over a literary festival that had planned to feature Umar Khalid, and the subsequent disruption of that event. Your men, instead of calming the situation in a peaceful manner, cracked down in a way that injured several people, including students, journalists and police.

So far, the police has registered an FIR against unknown men for rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, mischief, causing damage etc. But now, this video gives you visual evidence of your own men’s misdeeds. What action will you take against them?

Regards,

The Quint
