A Delhi Court sentenced filmmaker and popular Dastangoi artist, Mahmood Farooqui to seven years imprisonment for raping an American PhD scholar.

The Court also imposed a fine of 50 thousand rupees; failing to pay which would add another three months to his sentence.

Mahmood Farooqui, producer and co-director of Bollywood film Peepli Live, was convicted by a Delhi court on Saturday in a rape case filed by an American woman who alleged that Farooqui raped her in a rented accommodation at Sukhdev Vihar in Delhi.

He was arrested in June 2015 after the 35-year-old researcher from Columbia University accused him of sexual assault in March 2015. Farooqui, however denied the allegations, and was granted bail for good conduct in early 2016.

The rape survivor also told the court that she did not resist the rape for fear of being killed like the victim in the December 16 gangrape case.
