Sex workers from Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district donated Rs 1 lakh towards relief work in rain-ravaged Chennai.

They took from their savings and survived on just one meal a day to collect the money. A cheque was handed over to the district collector Anil Kawade on Monday at an event organised by NGO Snehalaya in Ahmednagar.

Of around 3,000 sex workers in the district in western Maharashtra, almost 2,000 contributed to the relief fund, Snehalaya founder Girish Kulkarni said.

With over 300 people dead and lakhs of people displaced from their homes, the floods in Tamil Nadu caused by heavy rains have had a tremendous impact on the life of the people. Economic activity came to a standstill.
