Rescue operation comes to an end for the day. Central railways has cancelled 10 trains originating from the accident spot. 

  • Mumbai-bound Janata Express and Varanasi-bound Kamayani Express derailed on Tuesday at 11:30 pm in Madhya Pradesh
  • 10 coaches derailed on bridge over Mochak river near Harda
  • 30 dead, 300 rescued; injured taken to Harda hospital
  • Mochak river flooded over, water eroded soil under the track
  • Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia announced, Rs 50,000 for seriously injured
  • 9 trains cancelled and others diverted from the damaged route

25 bodies have been brought in till now. The recognised bodies will be sent home and the others will be sent to the hospital.

According to the CM, search operation is still on at the site of accident.

At today’s Parliament session, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has stated, amid protests by Congress members, that the swollen Machak river has led to the derailment.

Additional Director General of Railways Anuradha Shankar has supported Suresh Prabhu’s statement by saying that the trains derailed on soft soil caused by the flash floods in Machak river.

Congress leader Nitish Kumar has asked his office to collect information related to victims of the twin train tragedy and promises to extend all possible help.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have expressed concern for the people affected by the tragedy.

The death toll has risen to 27, including five children.

Once the Janata Express reaches Bhopal (with the remaining coaches), five more coaches will be added to it, says Anil Saxena, PRO of Railways.

The passengers are now headed towards Itarsi, the people will be taken to Mumbai and Bhopal with the help of added coaches through diverted routes.

Eye witness accounts, according to reports, claim that many are still trapped inside the derailed coaches.

Railways have announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased.

Rs 50,000 to grievously injured and 25,000 for minor injuries.

Madhya Pradesh police says 30 people have been reported dead, according to CNN-IBN reports.

More than 150 army personnel reach the spot for rescue operation.

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to make a statement in today’s Parliament session.

According to media reports, over 20 people have died in the Madhya Pradesh rail accident.

10 coaches of the Mumbai-Varansi Kamayani Express and five bogies of Jabalpur-Mumbai Janata Express have fallen into the Machak river while crossing a bridge in Madhya Pradesh late on Tuesday night.

Kamayani Express enroute to Varanasi from Mumbai derailed near Harda, about 160 kms from Bhopal, and the Mumbai-Jabalpur Janata Express derailed around 11.30 PM, according to reports on NDTV.

We will call for an inquiry into the incidents and will also take remedial measures to prevent such incidents in future.

Over 300 people have been rescued and sent to the nearest station.

The accident relief train has reached the spot and several passengers have been brought to a nearby station.
