Tharoor Responds to 7 July Summons, Calls Charges ‘Preposterous’

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor issued a statement in response to the Patiala House Court’s summons with regard to the Sunanda Pushkar case, terming the charges ‘preposterous and baseless.’

Earlier in the day, the court had taken cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police for abetment to suicide and committing cruelty on his wife, Sunanda Pushkar.

The court has summoned Tharoor on 7 July.

Have 'Professionally' Investigated Tharoor's Case, Will Defend It in Court: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police said it has "professionally" investigated the charges against Shashi Tharoor and will defend them in court after the Congress leader was summoned as an accused by a Delhi court in the case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death.

Dependra Pathak, chief spokesperson Delhi Police and special commissioner of police (Traffic), said, "We have investigated the case professionally. We will defend the case in the court and do a proper follow-up of the court proceedings."

The Delhi Police had on 14 May accused the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram of abetting Pushkar's suicide and told a city court that he should be summoned as an accused in the four-and-half year-old case, claiming there was sufficient evidence against him.

Charges Are Preposterous and Baseless, Says Shashi Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor issued a statement via his Twitter, terming the charges against him to be ‘preposterous and baseless’, and is the ‘product of a vindictive campaign’ against him.

Will Decide Course of Action After Accessing Chargesheet: Tharoor's Counsel

Tharoor’s counsel Vikas Pahwa told ANI that his team would decide on a course of action after accessing a copy of the chargesheet.

Since no offences are made out and the prosecution case is absurd and preposterous and is contrary to various judgments of SC, we shall take appropriate steps to deal with the chargesheet.

Court Takes Congnisance of Charges, Summons Tharoor on 7 July

The court has issued summons against Shashi Tharoor for 7 July, stating that “there exists sufficient grounds to proceed against Dr Shashi Tharoor for commission of offence under Sections 306 and 498-A of IPC.”

What Is Shashi Tharoor Being Charged With?

On 5 June, the special court at the Patiala House Court is expected to announce whether it will accept or reject the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police in relation to the death of Sunanda Pushkar.

The case was transferred to the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal on 24 May, since Shahi Tharoor – the deceased’s husband and a sitting MP – is a suspect.

Special Court to Take a Decision on 5 June

A special court in the Patiala House Court in New Delhi, on 28 May, reserved its decision on taking cognisance of the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police, in the mysterious death of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, for 5 June.

The 3,000-page charge sheet filed in the court on 14 May named Tharoor as the accused under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On 28 May, the public prosecutor argued before the court about the grounds on which the charge sheet should be accepted by the court.
