(This story is being published in the backdrop of news reports (20 October) indicating that a Delhi-based lawyer practicing in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court has filed IT returns to the tune of Rs 125 crore. The stunning declaration came to light during IT raids at the lawyer’s residence. The Quint’s Chandan Nandy has gathered additional information in the course of his consequent investigations)

A Delhi lawyer who is said to have suddenly filed Income Tax returns of Rs 125 crore following a search at his south Delhi residence in an upmarket locality on Wednesday is said to be close to a UP politician who has devoted much energy to identity politics.

The lawyer, son of a retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, is linked to a former secretary of the leader of one of India’s top business houses for which he “lobbies” with politicians in power as well as senior bureaucrats.

Lawyer Owns Firm Set Up in 2005

The lawyer runs a law firm that was launched in February 2014 after he quit another firm that was established by him and two others in 2005. During the IT raid on his residence and offices, which took place after 30 September, the deadline set by the government for filing tax returns, the lawyer was in Dubai but returned post-haste after he was instructed to do so by revenue department officials.

The law firm that the lawyer heads now focuses on corporate law, with the main thrust on real estate, which he specialises in, manufacturing and hospitality. Three years ago, the lawyer purchased a Rs 100-crore house in Jor Bagh, raising many eyebrows.
