1. Ahead of UN Meet, India Says 21 Killed This Year in Ceasefire Violations by Pakistan
Ahead of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly that begins on September 17, during which India and Pakistan are expected to face off over Kashmir, India on Sunday said the Pakistan Army has committed more than 2,050 “unprovoked” ceasefire violations this year in which 21 Indians have been killed.
Such details are usually released by the Defence Ministry but the Ministry of External Affairs shared the data in a bid to build a case that Pakistan has been trying to push cross-border terrorist infiltration since the beginning of the year and create instability in the Valley.

Describing the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam as an “important and brave decision”, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that his government is not averse to carrying out such an exercise in his state — if need be, in phases.
Speaking to The Indian Express in an interview, the Chief Minister also said that his government will “respect” the verdict in the Ayodhya case that is being heard in the Supreme Court.

3. 1,422 Killed in Normal but Erratic Rains This Year
The southwest monsoon overcame an arid start to record slightly above-average rainfall in a year that saw the highest number of extreme rainfall events and the most people killed in the season since relevant data started being recorded in 2010, showed an HT analysis a day before the monsoon officially starts retreating on Monday.
Data recorded close to 1,800 extreme rainfall events this monsoon, more than half of which were in August, underlining the expanding impact of climate change in the June-September monsoon, which accounts for 70% of India’s annual rainfall.

4. ‘New Battlefield’: Pinarayi Vijayan Hits out at Amit Shah Over Hindi Tweet
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday derided Union home minister Amit Shah’s push for Hindi as India’s national language as “a new battlefield in the name of language.”
“Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s Hindi agenda push despite nationwide protest needs to be seen as Sangh Parivar’s signs to launch a new battlefield in the name of language. The perception that only Hindi can unite the country is completely wrong. People in the south and the north-east don’t speak Hindi,” Vijayan wrote in a Facebook post.

5. Haryana Will Have Its NRC, Says CM Manohar Lal Khattar
Joining the chorus of BJP leaders seeking a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in their states on the lines of the exercise carried out in Assam recently, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said the government would implement NRC in the state.
Talking to reporters in Panchkula after meeting Justice HS Bhalla (retd), former chairman of the state Human Rights Commission, as part of the BJP’s nationwide Jan Sampark programme ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, Khattar said, “I told (Justice Bhalla) we will implement NRC in Haryana and seek his cooperation on how to implement it. He has also suggested that Haryana should have a Law Commission.”

6. Vadodara: MS University Asks Its Students to Join Rally Against Article 370
Students from MS University attended a Bharat Ekta rally Sunday after a WhatsApp message by the institution’s administration urged them to participate “for nation building” and “in support of the abolition of Article 370” by the government.
The message sent by the university to all students through WhatsApp groups read: “For nation building, University urges all staff and students of MSU to join Bharat Ekta March organised by Vadodara Citizen Committee in support of the abolition of Article 370 and 35A by GOI.”

7. 12 Drown as Boat Tips Over in Andhra Pradesh River, Several Missing
Twelve people have died and several are missing after a tourist boat overturned in the Godavari River in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday afternoon. There were 63 people on board the boat and 21 have been rescued, authorities said.
The boat had started off for the picturesque Papikondalu hill range, a prime tourist destination, from Gandi Pochamma Temple near Devipatnam, news agency PTI reported.

8. Next Step in Lifting Valley Curbs: Allow BSNL Post-Paid Mobiles
The next small step in easing the clampdown in the Kashmir Valley is likely to be a further opening up of telecom curbs. Senior officials in the state administration said they are pushing for opening up post-paid BSNL mobile connections in the Valley immediately.
According to officials, J&K Police has advocated this relaxation in internal meetings and a decision is expected at the earliest. The second step in restoring communication may be in the direction of allowing Internet services for commercial organisations.

With the drone strikes on the world’s biggest oil producer, Saudi Arabian Oil Co or Saudi Aramco disrupting around 5% of the global oil supply and exacerbating tensions in the Persian Gulf, India -- the world’s third largest oil importer -- is keeping a close watch on the situation.
While the reported strikes by 10 drones at Abqaiq and Khurais oil facilities, disrupted around half of Saudi Arabia’s oil capacity, the US has blamed Iran for the attacks.
