Man Killed After Being Struck by Lightning in Kolkata
A man was killed after being struck by lightning in Maidan area of Kolkata on 28 July, police said.
Ajoy Mallick (27) was hit by lightning during a thunderstorm at around 6.30 pm, they said.
He was rushed to SSKM Hospital where doctors declared him "brought dead".

BJP-RSS Hand Behind St Stephen Withdrawing Invite to Mamata: TMC
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership, on 28 July, sniffed a BJP-RSS hand behind the cancellation of party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's engagement by St Stephen's College in New Delhi and said her voice "cannot be silenced".
St Stephen's College has withdrawn an invite extended to Banerjee to attend an event and interact with the students of the famed institute.

30 people have reportedly died after a bus fell down a mountain road in Ambenali Ghat, in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, reported ANI.

BJP leader Shaktipada Sardar of Mandirbazar Block, South 24 Parganas, died on Friday, 26 July after being allegedly attacked by goons, reported ANI.

“Govt Must Not Delay Appointing Judges”: Justice Kurian Joseph
Supreme Court judge Justice Kurian Joseph urged the government not to delay the appointment of SC and High Court judges, reported The Indian Express. He said that there shouldn’t be a delay of more than three months once the HC collegium sends names to the government. While appointing judges for the SC, the delay shouldn’t be beyond two weeks, he said.
Justice Joseph has also insisted that the retirement age of judges be increased to 70 years.
Explosions, Gunfires Heard in Afghanistan's Jalalabad
Numerous explosions and gunfires were heard in Jalalabad on Saturday in what is believed to be an ongoing attack close to a midwife training centre in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar city, according to TOLO News. No reports on casualties as yet.

US Court Recognises PNB's Claims on Nirav Modi's Asset Sales
In a relief for Punjab National Bank (PNB), a bankruptcy court in the US has recognised the bank’s claim on proceeds of any asset sales of Nirav Modi’s US-based companies. The court has directed that PNB should be provided with documents by people who are Nirav Modi’s debtors in the US. The bankruptcy court has also ordered summons should be issued for the examination of Modi and his four associates – Mihir Bhansali, Rakhi Bhansali, Ajay Gandhi and Kunal Patel.
Yamuna River Flows Above Danger Mark
The Yamuna river in Delhi flowed above the danger mark on Saturday. At least 43 boats have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. The water level increased following incessant rains in the national capital. On Friday, 1,15,000 cusec of water was released from Haryana's Hathini Kund barrage.
10 Injured as Mob Attacks Police in Manipur
At least 10 people, including four police personnel, were injured when a mob attacked the cops in Manipur's Jiribam district. Six protesters were also injured in the clash at Lalpani area of the district, police said.
They said a large number of protesters tried to stage a sit-in demonstration protesting against the Manipur People's Protection Bill 2018 which was passed by the state Assembly recently. The bill seeks to protect the identity of indigenous people of the state taking 1951 as the base year for treating people as natives of the state. The protesters have been demanding a change in the base year to 1972.
Another J&K Cop Abducted by Terrorists
Amid reports of another Jammu and Kashmir Police SPO’s abduction by terrorists in Tral, in Pulwama district, Director General of Police SP Vaid said the police were verifying the information.
According to IANS, three militants on Friday evening entered SPO Mudasir Ahmad Lone's house in Chankatar village of Tral area and abducted him.
“His family has said that he is visiting a relative,” he said.

Deadly Storm, Heavy Rains Claim Several Lives in UP
A total of 33 lives were lost due to storm, lightning and heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh in two days. Between 26 July and 27 July, six people died in Agra, three in Muzaffarnagar, three in Kasganj, four in Meerut, four in Mainpuri, and two in Bareilly. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, one died each in Kanpur Dehat, Mathura, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Raebareli, Jalaun, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Firozabad, Bulandshahr and Amethi due to heavy downpour in the state.

Six women who had professional dealings with Moonves told the magazine that he sexually harassed them between the 1980s and late 2000s.
