Karwan is perhaps one of the most ancient and also stinkiest constituencies of Hyderabad.
Spread over the historical precinct of Golconda, Toli Chowki, Ziaguda, M.D. Lines, Hakeempet and Tappa Chabutra, the constituency is fringed by Musi river through its length. The Karwan area is one of the oldest parts of the city as it formed the bridge that connected the Golconda Fort with Charminar and beyond, to the eastcoast port of Machilipatnam.
Karwan has recorded one of the highest nominations in Hyderabad with 21 candidates in the fray. The constituency has 3,03,020 voters, up from 2,87,977. It is one of the few constituencies where the voter count has surged.

In a major setback to Professor Kodandaram’s Telangana Jana Simithi (TJS), party vice president Rachana Reddy has quit the party, alleging massive corruption in issuing of tickets for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Rachana along with Marri Aditya and other leaders resigned from party, accusing Kodandaram of having a secret deal with People’s Front.
Rachana said, "Kodandaram is deliberately losing by aligning with Congress, while Congress doesn't know if they want to win or lose." She claimed that several “parachute candidates” and political brokers were entertained, while the sincere candidates were bulldozed.
She said, "Thousands of cadres who came behind you (Kodandaram) have been deprived of their political futures. We thought there would be an alternative government, but now this is not an option. They (Telangana Jana Samithi) don't even have the common sense to come into power."
