Three Die in Gas Leak in Meerut's Meat Factory

At least three people lost their lives in an alleged gas leak at a meat factory in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district on Thursday, 17 July.

SSP Meerut, Rajesh Pandey, said that the manager of the factory has been taken into custody, and a case will be registered against the culprit. "Further investigation is underway," he said.

17 People Dead in Tour Boat Accident in Missouri

17 people died in a tourist boat accident in Missouri, AP reported on Friday, 20 July. Several others were injured and have been hospitalised.

The accident occurred on Thursday night when a ‘Ride the Ducks’ tourist boat reportedly sank on Table Rock Lake with more than 30 people on board.

Gurugram School Murder Case: SC Dismisses Bail Plea Filed by Father of the Accused

The Supreme Court on Friday, 20 July, dismissed the bail application filed by the father of a student accused of killing a 7-year-old student in a Gurugram school last year.

The Apex Court held that the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order dismissing his bail plea was correct.

Over 70 Byculla Jail Inmates Admitted to Mumbai's JJ Hospital

More than 70 prisoners of Byculla Jail have been admitted to Mumbai's JJ Hospital on Friday, 20 July.

The medical Superintendent of JJ Hospital, Dr Sanjay Surase, said that the prisoners were taken to the hospital after they had complained of vomiting and abdominal pain and will be kept under observation for at least 48 hrs.

Pavement Outside Greater Kailash Metro Station Caves in After Rains

A portion of a pavement outside the underground Greater Kailash metro station caved in early on Friday, 20 July, due to accumulation of water after heavy rainfall.

"Greater Kailsah is a low-lying area having regular drainage issues. Repair of the caved-in portion is in progress and the affected area will be restored by tomorrow morning," a metro official said.

However, metro services were not affected on Botanical Garden–Janakpuri West Magenta Line, on which the station falls.

SC Stays Madras HC Order Awarding Grace Marks to NEET Students

The Supreme Court on Friday, 20 June stayed the order of the Madurai bench of Madras High Court that awarded 196 grace marks for students who had opted to write the examination in Tamil this year.

The bench posted the matter for hearing after two weeks and asked the parties to come out with a solution to deal with the situation, saying, "We cannot dole out marks in this fashion".

The bench observed that it appears that after the judgment, the students who opted for the Tamil language are in the advantageous position over others.

First in 21 years: India to Play China in Football Friendly

The Indian football team will play against China for the first time in 21 years, and the first time away from home, in an international friendly in October, continuing its preparation for the prestigious Asian Cup next year.

Govt Rejects Collegium Recommendation on Chief justice of Delhi High Court

The government has turned down a recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium to appoint Aniruddha Bose, a judge of the Calcutta High Court,  as the chief justice of the Delhi High Court. After keeping the file pending for over five months, the government has told the collegium to reconsider its decision.

It said that Bose, who has been a judge since 2004 doesn't have any experience as a chief justice to handle such a prominent high court.

14 People Wounded in a Suspected Knife Attack on a Bus in Germany

At least 14 people were wounded, two of them seriously, in a suspected knife attack on a bus in the northern German city of Luebeck, the local Luebecker Nachrichten newspaper reported on Friday.

Earlier, police in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, where Luebeck is located, tweeted that there was a major police deployment underway in the city.

"There is currently a major police deployment in Luebeck," the police force wrote. "We are examining the situation and will give more information later."

SC Slams Centre Over 'Unused' Environmental Funds

The Supreme Court today pulled up the Centre for "sitting" over funds of a whopping Rs 77,000 crore meant for protection of environment and asked it to inform "for the sake of the country" as to where this money would be spent.

A bench comprising justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta observed that if these funds were used in a proper manner, Delhi would not have been facing the problem of air pollution.

Thirteen Dead, Divers Search Sunken Missouri Tourist Boat for Missing

Divers on Friday, 20 July, pulled bodies from the wreckage of a "duck boat" that sank in a storm in a Missouri lake, killing at least 13 people in one of the deadliest US tourist incidents in recent years.

The World War Two-style amphibious vehicle was filled with 31 passengers including children when a microburst storm hit Table Rock Lake outside the tourist city of Branson, Missouri, on Thursday. A video of the incident showed it battered by waves.

The 13 dead included children and four people were still missing, officials said at a Friday morning news conference.

The National Transportation Safety Board and U.S. Coast Guard are investigating, officials said. Rader noted that the boat's captain survived the sinking but the driver did not.
