"Wrong Message Sent": Paswan On Appointment of NGT Chairman

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Monday, 23 July, said several Dalit MPs of the NDA have “expressed concern” over the appointment of Justice AK Goel as National Green Tribunal (NGT) chairman on July 6, The Indian Express reported.

The MPs said that it was the “wrong message” as he is “the judge who ruled against” the SC/ST Act, Paswan was quoted as saying.

David Headley, 26/11 Convict, Hospitalised After Attack in US Jail

Pakistani-American convict in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, David Headley, has been hospitalised and is in critical condition after being attacked by two prison inmates at a jail in Chicago, United States, the Times of India reported.

According to the report, Headley was attacked on 8 July. US authorities have refused to comment on the alleged attack, reported PTI.

YSR Congress Demand Special Status, Stage Protest

The YSR Congress Party workers staged a protest in the city of Ongole in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, 24 July, against denial of special status for the state, ANI reported. A State Bandh has also been organised by the regional party, The Hindu reported.

Some workers who were part of the protest have been arrested from Vijayawada, ANI added.

Minor Abducted, Raped in UP For 15 Days

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from Adarsh Mandi police station area of Muzaffarnagar, UP and raped for 15 days, PTI reported quoting local police.

The minor was reportedly abducted by the accused on 29 May, after which she was taken to Punjab and raped multiple times, the police spokesperson told PTI.

9 Australians Awarded Bravery Medals for Thai Cave Rescue

Nine Australians involved in rescuing 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand were awarded bravery medals for putting their lives in danger during the treacherous ordeal on Tuesday, 24 July, PTI reported.

Two divers have been awarded the Star of Courage, the second highest civilian bravery decoration in the Australian honors system after the Cross of Valor.

4 Passengers Die After Hitting Side Poles Beside Railway Track in Tamil Nadu

4 passengers died and at least 10 were injured on a local train in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, 24 July, after being hit by iron poles beside railway tracks at Chennai's St Thomas Mount, ANI reported. They were travelling on foot-board of a train.

UP Govt Submits Draft Report to SC on Protection of Taj

The UP government on Tuesday, 24 July, filed a draft vision document on the protection and preservation of Taj Mahal in Supreme Court, PTI reported. The report seeks the declaration of the whole Taj area as a no-plastic zone, and also the prohibition of water bottles in the area.

The government also asked that polluting industries in the region be directed to shut, PTI reported.

4 Women Beaten Up By Mob in West Bengal

Four women were allegedly beaten up and two of them stripped by a mob in Jalpaiguri city, West Bengal, on Monday, 23 July, on suspicion of them being child-lifters, ANI reported.

The women were rescued by local police and escorted to their homes. No arrests have been made yet, the news agency added.

A mob attacked a Muslim man at the marriage registrar’s office in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, 24 July, allegedly in an attempt to stop his marriage to a Hindu girl from Bijnor, ANI reported.

The couple reportedly works together at a company in Noida, UP. Police registered against two known and several unidentified persons, ANI added.

Explosions Reported in Kabul

Two explosions, minutes apart, hit the Afghan capital Kabul on Tuesday, 24 July. The first explosion was caused by a rocket that landed in a residential area in the west of the city and wounded at least four people, Reuters reported quoting officials.

The cause and exact location of the second explosion, which could have been heard in the centre of the city, were not immediately clear, a police spokesman said.

NEET Candidates' Data Leak: Rahul Writes to CBSE Chief, Seeks Probe

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to the CBSE over media reports claiming a “massive breach” of data of candidates who appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test this year, and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

In the letter to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) chairperson Anita Karwal, he called for putting in place additional safeguards to prevent such a breach in the future.

Drawing attention to the recent media reports regarding the "massive breach" of candidate data, Gandhi, in his letter, said:

It is alleged that this data is available on certain websites for a price, and has leaked the data of over 2,00,000 students.

The reports claimed that personal data, including names, phone numbers and email ids of over 2,00,000 candidates, who appeared for CBSE's National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year, were available for a price on some online portals.

“I am shocked by this wide scale theft of personal data that has compromised the privacy of candidates across the country,” Gandhi wrote in the letter dated 20 July.

UP Police Arrest Two Bangladeshi Terrorists

Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh said that two allged terrorists from Bangladesh have been arrested in Gautam Budh Nagar on Tuesday, 24 July.

He also made a reference to his speech during the debate on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha on Friday, saying:
