SC to Start Hearing Section 377 Pleas From 10 July

The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court will hear petitions against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalises homosexuality from 10 July.

Toddler Mowed Down by Private School Bus in Gurgaon

A two-year-old boy on Thursday was mowed down by a private school bus in Gurgaon's Rethoj village, police said.

The bus, belonging to the Vivek Model School located at Maruti Kunj, was on its way to school to drop children, they said.

The bus driver, Om Prakash, was caught by local villagers after he dropped the students in the school while he was returning from the same route 25 minutes after the incident, police said.

Local residents allegedly thrashed him and also pelted stones on the bus, they said.

J&K Police Constable Abducted by Militants

A constable of Jammu and Kashmir police, Javaid Ahmad Dar was abducted by militants from a local medical shop in Shopian, reported ANI.

Mandsaur Rape Case: 2 Accused Sent to Judicial Custody

Two people, who were arrested on charges of abducting and raping a minor girl in Mandsaur, were remanded to judicial custody by a local court today, an official said.

Irfan (20) and Asif (24) were produced before Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisha Gupta after their police custody expired, said district Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Singh.

"If necessary, we will seek their custody again," he added.

Betting, Gambling in Sports Can be Taxable Activities: Law Commision

Law Commission has recommended that gambling and betting on sports, including cricket, be allowed as regulated activities taxable under the direct and indirect tax regimes and used as a source for attracting Foreign Direct Investment.

The law commission has also recommended linking Aadhar or PAN card of an individual indulging in betting and gambling, and making the transaction cashless to regulate illegal activities such as money laundering.

Meerut Chief Medical Officer's Driver Shoots Another Doctor

Driver of Meerut Chief Medical Officer (CMO) allegedly shot at a doctor employed at Hastinapur Government Hospital, outside the office, reported ANI. The doctor was leaving from a meeting called by the CMO.

The victim is undergoing treatment and the accused is absconding. Further investigation is underway.

Rupee Crumbles to All-Time Closing Low of 68.95 a Dollar

The Indian rupee tumbled for the second straight session to hit a fresh closing low of 68.95, sliding by 21 paise following a panic demand for the US dollar coupled with savage capital flight worries.

Fears over a slowdown in the country's economy in the midst of surging international crude oil prices along with unambiguously hawkish Federal Reserve policies and widening current account deficits predominantly kept the forex sentiment highly nervous.

Suspected RBI intervention, however, hauled the rupee off an intra-day low struck in the mid-afternoon trade and prevented it from touching the psychological 69 level.

Dozens Missing in Boat Capsize off Thai Tourist Island

Dozens of people are missing after a diving boat carrying 90 people capsized in rough seas off the Thai tourist island of Phuket, the Phuket office of Disaster, Prevention and Mitgation said on Thursday.

The boat was carrying 90 passengers when it capsized "half of them were rescued, the operation is still ongoing," it said.

Two nuns of Missionaries of Charity have been arrested on charges of child trafficking in Jharkhand, reported ANI. These nuns sold four babies - three in Jharkhand and one in UP. Further investigation is underway,” said Shyamanand Mandal,DSP Ranchi.

Witnesses in Soharabuddin Case Turning Hostile as Cbi Doctored Evidence: Jethmalani

Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani on Thursday accused the CBI in the Bombay High Court of fabricating evidence in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case, saying that is why a large number of prosecution witnesses have turned hostile in the case.

Jethmalani is the counsel for IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian, who was discharged by a trial court in the case.

He told a single-judge bench of Justice A M Badar that it was "no surprise" that the agency's star witnesses Nathuba Jadeja and Gurdayal Singh, drivers with the Gujarat ATS at the time of the alleged encounter, had turned hostile.

Amarnath Yatra Suspended from Jammu Due to Heavy Rains

Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir was suspended on Thursday, 5 July, from Jammu due to inclement weather.

No pilgrim has departed the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas for the cave shrine, Additional District Magistrate Jammu Arun Manhas said.

"Due to inclement weather the Amarnath Yatra from the base camp Yatri Niwas (at Bhagwatinagar) via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes will remain suspended," he said.

However, a batch of 1,798 pilgrims, who were stopped at Udhampur from leaving from the Pahalgam base camp in view of the inclement weather conditions, were allowed to move to Pahalgam on Thursday, a police official said.

Another Accused in Kathua Rape Case Declared 'Adult'

The Pathankot district and sessions court has accepted a medical report of an accused in the Kathua rape-and-murder case, who claimed to be a juvenile, which ascertained his age to be more than 20 years, Special Public Prosecutor J K Chopra said.

Rejecting the plea of defence counsel, district and sessions judge Tajwinder Singh said the accused, Parvesh Kumar alias ‘Mannu', will be treated as an adult, the lawyer said.

Chopra said the court has declined his application and declared the accused as a 'major'.

Latest News: UK Court Orders Seizure of Mallya’s UK Assets

A UK High Court judge has issued an enforcement order in favour of a consortium of 13 Indian banks, seeking to recover funds owed to them by beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya who is fighting extradition to India on fraud and money laundering charges worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore.

The order grants permission to the UK High Court Enforcement Officer to enter the 62-year-old tycoon's properties in Hertfordshire, near London.

It permits the officer and his agents entry to Ladywalk and Bramble Lodge in Tewin, Welwyn, where Mallya is currently based. However, it is not an instruction to enter, which means the banks have the option to use the order as one of the means to recover estimated funds of around 1.145 billion pounds.

3 Rohingya Muslims Held for Getting Aadhaar Illegally

Three Rohingya Muslims, including a woman, have been arrested at Balapur in Hyderabad for obtaining Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, PAN cards and Indian passports by allegedly submitting fake documents, police said on Thursday, 5 July.

The trio migrated to Hyderabad in 2013 from Myanmar as refugees but suppressed their identity and fraudulently got the identification documents, they said.

They colluded with locals to make false bonafide certificates based on which false declarations were made before government officials by suppressing facts that they were Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, V Saidulu, a police official said.

Nizam-Era Aircraft Hangar in Hyderabad Collapses, No Injuries

The nearly nine decade-old "Mississippi" aircraft hangarat at Gowliguda in Hyderabad, used by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation for city bus services, collapsed on Thursday, 5 July.

However, no one was injured in the incident.

"The old Central Bus Station (CBS) at Gowliguda which has been a landmark for many decades collapsed on its own at 7.15 am.

There was no injury or loss of life to anyone as the complex was vacated a week ago itself in view of the weak structure," Senior Public Relations Manager G R Kiran said.

The area was barricaded as a precautionary measure, he told PTI.

Two Men Assaulted in Manipur on Suspicion of Being Child-Lifters

Triggered by rumours on the social media, locals roughed up two men in separate incidents in Manipur suspecting them of being child-lifters and cannibals, police said on Thursday, 5 July.

According to police, the locals found the duo in a "disoriented state", about 2 km apart, in Saikul area of Kangpokpi district, police said adding, that the social media posts were untrue.

As the victims failed to give a satisfactory reply upon being quizzed, they were assaulted, police said. None of them was carrying any documents which could prove their identity, they added.

EU Lawmakers Against Opening Talks With Eu Countries on Copyright Reform

EU lawmakers on Thursday, 5 July rejected the tough position recommended by a key committee on an overhaul of EU copyright rules which aim to make tech giants such as Google and Facebook share revenues with publishers, broadcasters and artists.

The revamp has triggered strong criticism from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, net neutrality expert Tim Wu, internet pioneer Vint Cerf and others.

Europe's broadcasters, publishers and artistes such as Paul McCartney back the overhaul, saying it would level the playing field for contents holders.

Heavy Rains Lash National Capital, Showers Predicted Overnight

Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital this afternoon even as the weatherman has predicted the showers to continue overnight.

"The minimum temperature recorded at 8.30 AM was at 26 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal," a MeT department official said. The humidity level was recorded at 72 percent.

"More rains are expected towards the evening and may continue overnight. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 38 and 26 degrees Celsius," the official added.

On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures had settled at 36.7 and 23.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

One Arrested for Threatening Priyanka Chaturvedi on Twitter

The Mumbai Police on Thursday, 5 July, arrested a man from Ahmedabad, on charges of threatening Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi on Twitter.

The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday, 3 July, had asked the Mumbai Police to register a case against a Twitter user in connection with a rape threat to Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi, and take legal action against the guilty.

The ministry had also asked Twitter India to furnish details of the account which threatened Chaturvedi.

Centre Directs States to Curb Mob Lynching Based on Social Media Rumours

Centre has asked the states & union territories to take measures to prevent incidents of mob lynching fueled by rumours of child lifting circulating on social media. The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged them to keep a watch for early detection of such rumours and initiate effective measures.

The MHA has also asked the states & union territories to direct District Administrations to identify vulnerable areas and conduct community outreach programmes for creating awareness and building confidence.

It was also stressed that complaints of child abduction or kidnapping should be properly investigated to instill confidence among the affected person.

Bengaluru Police Attach 159 Properties to Vijay Mallya

Bengaluru police through Enforcement Directorate submitted a report before Delhi's Patiala House Court stating that they have identified 159 properties of Vijay Mallya and United Breweries. The police has now sought more time to identify more properties.

The court was hearing ED's plea seeking attachment of Vijay Mallya's properties. The next date of hearing in the case has been fixed for 11 October.

Main Accused In Dhule Lynching Case Arrested: Maharashtra Police

Speaking to PTI, an official from the Maharashtra police confirmed that the main accused in the Dhule lynching case had been arrested by the Maharashtra police yesterday.

The accused, a 22-year-old man named Maharu Pawar, was absconding and hiding in neighbouring Nandurbar district, from where he was arrested.
