US to Slap Tariffs on Extra $200 bn of Chinese Imports

The Trump administration raised the stakes in its trade war with China, saying it would slap 10 percent tariffs on an extra $200 billion worth of Chinese imports.

US officials released a list of thousands of Chinese imports the administration wants to hit with the tariffs, including hundreds of food products as well as tobacco, chemicals, coal, steel and aluminum.

Heavy Rains, Landslide in Uttarakhand

Amid heavy rain in Uttarakhand, a suspension bridge at Pithoragarh's Nachani area collapsed and washed away on Wednesday, 11 July, ANI reported. In Tehri, national highway (NH) 94 Chamba-Rishikesh was blocked after landslides. Governments schools and anganwadi centres across have also been shut across the state following the heavy rain and thunderstorm alert, the news agency tweeted.

Buddhist Monk From Sri Lanka Strangles Officer Who Tried To Arrest Him

A 37-year-old Sri Lankan Buddhist monk on Tuesday, 10 July assaulted and strangled a police officer who sought to arrest him on a warrant for alleged sexual harassment, a police spokesman said to Reuters.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the monk fatally injured the unarmed police officer by throttling him while resisting arrest at his temple in the central district of Ratnapura, 100 km from the capital Colombo.

IIT Kanpur To Assess Air Pollution Around Taj Mahal

The Centre on Wednesday, 11 July, said that a special committee has been set up to find the source of pollution in and around the Taj Mahal that will suggest measures to prevent it. IIT Kanpur will also assist and assess the air pollution level in and around the Taj Mahal. The committee will submit its report in four months time, the Centre told SC.

The Supreme Court had earlier slammed the centre for their “lethargy” in preserving the historic medieval structure, dubbing the issue of preserving the historic medieval structure a "hopeless cause". It also expressed anguish over the Uttar Pradesh government failure to come out with a vision document to preserve and protect the Taj Mahal.

Trump Nominates US Ambassador to Pakistan For Top Diplomatic Position

President Donald Trump nominated career foreign service officer David Hale, who is currently the US Ambassador to Pakistan, as the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs on Wednesday, 11 July, PTI reported.

If confirmed by the United States Senate, Hale would replace Thomas A Shannon, who retired on 4 June.

10 Dead, 10 Injured in Jalalabad Attack

At least ten have died and ten injured in an attack on Wednesday, 11 July on an education department building in the city of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, reported Reuters citing officials. This, after a suicide bombing in Jalalabad left 12 people dead on 10 July, Tuesday.

After announcing the death toll, the provincial governor's office said in a statement the attack was over, but gave no details, Reuters added.

Eleven Suspected Militants Killed in Egypt's Sinai Shootout

Egyptian security forces killed 11 suspected militants in a shootout in al-Arish, the capital of North Sinai province, state news agency MENA reported, as authorities pushed ahead with an operation to crush Islamic State.

The shootout occurred during a raid on a suspected militant hideout in an abandoned house in al-Arish, MENA said, citing an un-named security source. Three machine guns and a rifle were found at the hideout, MENA said.

The report did not mention any casualties or wounded among the security forces.
