Encounter Breaks Out Between Naxals and Security Forces in Chhattisgarh

An encounter broke out between purported Naxals and troops of the 227 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), along with the Chhattisgarh Police, in Sukma on Saturday. Search operations are underway and the body of a Naxal has been recovered, the CRPF said.

200 Shanties Gutted in Major Fire in Nashik Slum; No Casualty

Over 200 shanties were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a slum in Bhadrakali area of Nashik in Maharashtra on Saturday, the police said.

The fire erupted around 9:30 am in Bheemwadi slum area. There was no report of any loss of life in the incident, the police said.

Special Court Rejects Teltumbde's Interim Bail Plea

A special court in Mumbai on Saturday remanded activist Anand Teltumbde to judicial custody in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case and rejected his plea for temporary bail, which he sought in view of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The National Investigation Agency had arrested the Dalit scholar on 14 April after he surrendered before it following the Supreme Court's directives.

Teltumbde, the grandson-in-law of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar, was produced before special NIA court judge AT Wankehede, who remanded him to judicial custody.

J&K Govt Revokes PSA of 28 People

The Jammu and Kashmir government has revoked the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) against 28 people lodged in jails within and outside the Union territory, officials said on Saturday.

A prominent name to figure in the list is Mohammad Yasin Khan, head of the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturing Federation (KTMF) and the Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA), they added.

President's Secretary Sanjay Kothari is New Central Vigilance Commissioner

Sanjay Kothari, the secretary to the president, was on Saturday appointed the Central Vigilance Commissioner, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.

The post of the chief of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the country's anti-corruption watchdog, was lying vacant since June last year after KV Chowdary completed his tenure.

"At a ceremony held today at 10:30 am at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sanjay Kothari was sworn-in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner," the communique said.

Two Militants, Associate Killed In Encounter With Security Forces in J&K

Two militants and a "hardcore" militant associate were killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police were quoted by PTI as saying.

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Goripora area of Awantipora in the south Kashmir district in the early hours of Saturday after receiving specific information about the presence of some militants there, a police official said.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon the forces, who retaliated, he said.

In the ensuing gunfight, two militants and one "hardcore" associate of the militants were killed, the official said. He said searches were going on in the area and further details were awaited.
