Sabarimala Karma Samithi Calls Statewide Shutdown

Sabarimala Karma Samithi called for a statewide shutdown on Saturday, 17 November, from 6 am to 6 pm, in protest against the arrest of Hindu Aikya Vedi state president KP Sasikala at Marakkoottam on Friday night.

Trump Hints at Not Imposing New Round of Tariffs on China

US President Donald Trump has spoke about the possibility of not levying another round of tariffs on China – this time on $267 billion worth of imported Chinese goods – as the next step in the trade war he is waging against the Asian giant.

In a statement to reporters at the White House, the president said that Beijing "wants to make a deal" with Washington to resolve the trade dispute, which has led to the mutual levying of tariffs worth billions of dollars. He added that any deal would have to be "reciprocal."

Polling Underway for First Phase of J&K Rural Polls

The stage is set for the Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir as all arrangements have been put in place for the first phase on Saturday, 17 November.

The polling began at 8 am with 427 candidates in the fray for 536 Sarpanch Halqas and 5,951 candidates for 4,048 Panch wards for the first phase of the Panchayat polls.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday, 16 November, that the Pakistani elite was involved in transferring national wealth abroad through money laundering, in a veiled attack on ousted premier Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law retired captain Mohammad Safdar were sentenced to 11 years, eight years and one year respectively in prison in the Avenfield properties case related to their purchase of four luxury flats in London through corrupt practices.

At Least 12 Students Injured in School Bus Accident in Noida

At least 12 students were injured after a school bus carrying more than 30 students hit a divider at Noida’s Rajnigandha Chowk underpass on Saturday, 17 November.

The driver and conductor of the school bus are said to be in critical condition. The injured students have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

At least four persons, including a 16-year-old boy, died and five others were injured after being hit by a car at Shahapur in Thane district of Maharashtra on Saturday, 17 November, police said.

At least two people were killed and 10 others injured as a bomb exploded near a flyover in Pakistan's port city of Karachi on Friday, 16 November.

The blast killed two teenagers, aged 18 and 16, and injured 10 others, officials said.

Punjab CM Political Secretary Karnapal Singh Passes Away

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's political secretary Karanpal Singh Sekhon died at a military hospital at Aswan in Egypt, officials said Saturday.

Sekhon (62), who died of cardiac arrest on Friday night, is survived by his son and a daughter.

The chief minister described the death of Sekhon as a huge personal loss. Sekhon had been closely associated with him for a long time, with the two families also sharing close ties for at least four generations.

Kargil to Have Museum Soon

Kargil, which shot into prominence during Operation Vijay in 1999, will soon have a museum, an official said Saturday.

It will come up soon as the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil agree to provide prime land in the town for the museum, Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums Muneer-ul-Islama said.

He said the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums is setting up regional museums at various places in the state outside the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu.

TTV Dinakaran to be Put on Trial as Court Orders Framing of Charges in Bribery Case

A Delhi court on Saturday ordered framing of criminal conspiracy and other charges against former AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran in the alleged Election Commission bribery case related to two-leaves party symbol.

Special Judge Ajay Bharadwaj ordered to put Dinakaran on trial for the offence punishable under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act.

Dinakaran, who had floated Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam party after being expelled from the AIADMK, was arrested in April 2017 and was later granted bail.

Six Tourists from Mumbai Die in Bus-Lorry Collision in Hubbali

Six tourists from Mumbai died and ten others were injured Saturday in a crash between a bus and lorry near Hubbali, the police said.

Both vehicles smashed into each other, Dharwad Superintendent of Police G Sangeetha said.Six people in the private bus died at the spot, she said.

The condition of three of the injured, who were admitted to hospital, is stated to be critical, the officer said. The bus driver is among those injured.

CM Kejriwal Discharged in Defamation Complaint Filed by Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra

A Delhi court on Saturday discharged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation complaint filed by Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra, saying Chandra had not followed proper procedure while filing his plea.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted the relief to the Aam Aadmi Party chief, noting that Chandra had filed the complaint through a power of attorney which is “barred” under law. The court said that Chandra was at liberty to file a fresh complaint in accordance with law.

Peacekeeper Shot Dead in Central Africa's West

A peacekeeper died after a UN military base was attacked by unidentified gunmen in the west of the volatile Central African Republic, the UN mission in the country said Saturday.
