US Ambassador Ends Term in Afghanistan

Washington's ambassador to Afghanistan ended his term and left the country on Monday as scheduled, a State Department spokesperson told AFP, even as US-Taliban peace talks remained on hold.

John Bass, a veteran diplomat, had served in Kabul since December 2017.

South Korea's Moon Seeks Kim Jong Un Visit to Seoul

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on 7 January, called for better relations with the North so leader Kim Jong Un can visit Seoul, despite Pyongyang's abandonment of its nuclear and missile test moratoriums.

Mumbai: Fire at Vasai Fort

A fire broke out at the ancient Vasai Fort in Maharashtra's Palghar district on the night of 6 January. The blaze erupted around 9 pm when some drug addicts were sitting in the fort compound.

As per the officials, No casualty was reported and the structure also did not suffer any damage.

MK Stalin: No Clarity on CAA Issue

The DMK led by M K Stalin boycotted the Governor's address to the Tamil Nadu Assembly and walked out of the House amid slogans raised against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Following the walkout the DMK President MK Stalin stated that he had sent a letter to TN Assembly secretary to move a resolution against Citizenship Amendment Act, he further mentioned that till date there is no clarity on whether the issue will be taken up or not.

Begusarai: Three Persons Killed in a Road Accident

In a horrific incident three persons were crushed to death by an unidentified vehicle in Bihar's Begusarai district. The incident occurred on state highway on the evening of 6 January.

A Class 10 student died and three others injured on Tuesday, 7 January, when the car they were travelling in collided with a security forces' vehicle in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to a protest by local residents who hurled stones at police personnel, an official said.

Jammu-Srinagar NH Closed for Second Day

The 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was closed for the second day on Tuesday, 7 January, amid snowfall and landslides at several places in Ramban district, traffic department officials said.

Snowfall is continuing at many places including Jawahar Tunnel - the gateway to Kashmir valley, while rains triggered multiple landslides along Panthiyal-Ramsu stretch overnight, hampering efforts of early restoration of the highway, the officials said.

Pakistan's National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, on Tuesday, 7 January passed three crucial bills to give extension to Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years.

Charred Body of a Minor Found in Bengal

The charred body of a 17- year-old girl was found under a culvert in West Bengal's South Dinajpur district, police said on Tuesday, 7 January.

The victim's family alleged that she was gang-raped and then set ablaze.

As per district Superintendent of Police, the charred body of the girl with injury marks was found under a culvert in Kumarganj area on Monday, 6 January.

Three persons suspected to be involved in the incident have been arrested, he said.

6.6 Quake Strikes Puerto Rico Amid Heavy Seismic Activity

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico before dawn on Tuesday, 7 January less than a day after another one hit the U.S. territory and caused heavy damage in some areas.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit just south of the island at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Officials did not issue a tsunami warning.

There was no immediate report of injuries or damage.

11 Yemen Soldiers Killed in Rebel Missile Attack

Eleven Yemeni soldiers were killed and more than 20 wounded on Tuesday in a rebel missile attack on a military camp housing government troops, a military source said.

The missile hit the Al-Sadrain Camp in Ad-Dali province while soldiers were gathering in the morning, the source told AFP.

It is the second rebel attack in the province in little more than a week. On December 29, five soldiers of the southern separatist-dominated Security Belt Forces were killed in a similar attack in Ad-Dali.

Despite a lull in fighting in most of Yemen in recent months, Ad-Dali province has remained a flashpoint.

8 Dead, 1 Injured in Fire in Russia Greenhouse

A fire at a greenhouse farm in a Moscow suburb has killed eight people and injured one other person on Tuesday morning, Russian emergency services said.

All eight victims were migrants from Tajikistan who apparently worked at the farm.

The fire broke out in one of the metal construction trailers where workers lived. Local firefighters battled the blaze for an hour. It wasn't immediately clear what caused it.

The Supreme Court will hear on 10 January the petition by Tata Sons Private Ltd (TSPL) challenging the NCLAT decision restoring Cyrus Mistry as executive chairman of the Tata Group.

The apex court website on Tuesday showed the plea to be listed before a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant.

TSPL has challenged the 18 December decision of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) that gave a big relief to Cyrus Investment Pvt Ltd and Mistry, restoring him as the executive chairman of TSPL.

3 Chinese Held with 180kg of Red Sandalwood at IGI

Three Chinese nationals have been apprehended by CISF personnel at the Delhi airport for allegedly smuggling about 180 kilkograms of red sandalwood, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The passengers Li Xin, Cheng Zhen and Jian Zhov were intercepted when they reached the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Monday to board a flight to Kunming in China, the official said.
