Moderate Intensity Quake Hits Shimla

A moderate intensity earthquake of magnitude 3.6 shook Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla on Monday morning, the Meteorological Department said.

There was no report of any casualty or damage to property.

The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 10 km north-east in Shimla district, the department said, adding that tremors were felt in and around the district at 5.18 am.

Husband, Three Aides Acquitted in Murder Case of Wife

A court in Maharashtra has acquitted a man and his three associates accused of killing his wife six years ago and destroying evidence of the crime.

District Judge P P Jadhav, in his order last Tuesday, acquitted the woman's husband, Datta Kisan Jadhav (33), and his three colleagues Ravidas Rajaram Patil (51), Dayanand Kisan Jadhav (28) and Subash Ramu Bhurkud (44), saying the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.

All the four accused and the victim, identified as Pushpa, worked in a brick kiln at Desaigaon in Thane district.

According to the prosecution, the victim got married to Datta Jadhav in 2012.

The accused did not allow his wife to visit her parents' house. He also doubted her character and used to beat her up after coming home heavily drunk, the prosecution said.

Rain Lashes Parts of Punjab and Haryana

Cold wave conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana on Monday, 6 January, after overnight rains lashed various parts of the two states.

The minimum temperatures, however, rose several notches above the normal in these states following the downpour.

In Punjab, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their respective lows at 8.2 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees Celsius and 10.7 degrees Celsius, up to five degrees above the normal, a Meteorological Department official said.

Mumbai: 8 Injured in a Fire Accident

Eight people were injured after a major fire broke out in a commercial building in Kamathipura locality of Mumbai on Monday, 6 January, a fire brigade official said.

As per the officials one of the injured persons was reported to be critical. The blaze erupted around 9.15 am in the ground plus one-storey China Building, located in Baghdadi compound of Kamathipura area in central Mumbai.

The structure has various commercial units and some people were also residing in it.

SC Asks Mallya to Not to Use Pendency of His Plea to Stall Legal Proceedings

The Supreme Court on Monday said that Vijay Mallya cannot use pendency of his plea in the apex court to stall insolvency proceedings initiated against him in other jurisdictions.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde passed the order after the Centre told the top court that Mallya used pendency of his plea to stall the UK court from delivering verdict in insolvency proceedings.

Mallya had approached the apex court on June 27 seeking a stay on the confiscation of properties owned by him and his relatives.

Main Accused in Nanakana Sahib Vandalism Arrested

The main accused in the recent incident of vandalism at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Pakistan's Punjab province has been arrested and charged with a non-bailable section of the stringent anti-terrorism act, a top official said on Monday, 6 January.

According to media reports, a violent mob had attacked the Gurdwara and pelted it with stones on Friday, 3 January. A team of police had to intervene briskly to control the situation.

The accused, identified as Imran, was arrested on Sunday, 5 January, for his role in the incident, Geo News reported.

A trial court on Monday framed charges against Malayalam film actor Dileep and other accused in the case of alleged abduction and molestation of a south Indian actress in 2017.

The actor and nine other accused were present in the additional special sessions court in Ernakulamwhen the charges were framed against them.

All of them have denied the charges.

Sudanese Man Gets Jail for Killing Compatriot, Stabbing Indian Mother-Daughter Duo

A criminal court in the UAE ordered a 43-year-old Sudanese man to 10 years in prison for killing a fellow countryman and assaulting an Indian woman and her minor daughter in an elevator in Sharjah in 2019, according to a media report on Monday.

The accused was also ordered to pay Dhiram 200,000 (USD 54,450) to the family of the deceased, identified as Naggi Shaikh Edriss, 46, as blood money, the Khaleej Times reported.

The Sudanese man, who was not named in the report, was sentenced seven years in jail for the murder and three years for the assault on the Indians. He will be deported to Sudan after completing the prison term, the report said.

Man Carrying Pistol Held at Jamia Millia Islamia Metro Station

A 34-year-old man was arrested by CISF personnel at Jamia Millia Islamia Metro Station for allegedly carrying a pistol and five live rounds, police said on Monday,6 January.

The accused, Ameer Hamza Khan, a resident of southeast Delhi's Zakir Nagar, hails from Meerut district of Uttar Pardesh, they said.

Pakistan Rangers Handover 20 Released Fishermen to BSF at Wagah Border

20 Indian fishermen, who were released from a Pakistani jail on Sunday, 4 January, in a goodwill gesture amidst tense bilateral ties, reached the Wagah Border today.

The fishermen were handed over to the Border Security Force by the Pakistan Rangers, officials said.

"Upon their arrival, the Edhi Foundation received them at the Lahore railway station and took them to its centre where they were provided food and new clothes," a foundation official told PTI.

5.7-Magnitude Quake Strikes Puerto Rico, Damage Reported San Juan

A 5.7-magnitude quake jolted Puerto Ricans out of their beds Monday morning, the strongest quake yet to hit the US. territory that has been shaking for the past week.

The quake struck just south of the island at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (over 6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Service. There was no tsunami threat, officials said.

Power outages were reported in some parts of Puerto Rico following the quake, Angel Vazquez, the emergency management director for the southern coastal city of Ponce, told The Associated Press.

Court Extends Judicial Custody of Former Fortis Promoter

Delhi court on Monday, 6 January extended the judicial custody of former Fortis Healthcare promoter Malvinder Mohan Singh and former CMD of Religare Enterprises Limited Sunil Godhwani for two weeks in a money laundering case related to the alleged misappropriation of funds at Religare Finvest Limited (RFL).

Special Judge Sandeep Yadav sent both the accused to further custody till January 20. The court passed the order after they were produced before it on expiry of their earlier judicial custody.

J&K Admin Has Been Outsourced to Bureaucrats: JKNPP

The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) on Monday said the administration in the Union Territory seems to have been outsourced to bureaucrats from outside the state.

A 22-year-old student from West Bengal, visiting Himachal Pradesh as a tourist along with his friends, died on Monday, 6 January, after the taxi they were travelling in plunged into Beas River near here, said police.

The deceased was identified as Sandipta Kundu, whose seven friends too were injured in the mishap, Mandi superintendent of police Gurdev Sharma said.
