Yogendra Yadav Detained, 'Manhandled' by Police in TN

Swaraj Abhiyan Chief Yogendra Yadav and four of his associates were detained and allegedly manhandled by police on Saturday in Tiruvannamalai district when they were on their way to meet protesting farmers against the proposed eight-lane expressway between Chennai and Salem.

In a series of tweets, the psephologist-turned-politician claimed besides being prevented from going to meet the farmers, his phone was snatched, he was manhandled and pushed into a police van.

4 Dead in Explosions at Two TN Fireworks Manufacturing Units

Four people were killed and an equal number injured in explosions at two fireworks manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar and Salem districts on Saturday, 8 September, PTI reported quoting a police official.

A 28-year-old man died and two others were injured in an explosion at an illegal firecrackers manufacturing unit near Athur in Salem, they said.

The three were engaged in manufacturing the crackers when the incident occurred, police said, adding that the unit was being run illegally.

Terrorists Shoot an Unidentified Person in J&K

An unidentified person has been shot dead by terrorists near Naseem Bagh area of Hazratbal in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have cordoned off the area to nab the attackers, reported ANI.

Speaking to the news agency, Imtiaz Ismail Parray, SSP Srinagar, said, “We are trying to ascertain the identity of the victim. We have even recovered a pistol from his possession.”

Kejriwal Launches Mega Drive to Plant 5 Lakh Saplings in a Day

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a mega tree plantation drive by planting a sapling at the Yamuna floodplain in Usmanpur village, with thousands others joining him in the initiative on 8 September, Saturday.

The government wants to plant 5 lakh trees and shrubs in the city in a day as part of the drive.

Officials said around one lakh students and residents are participating in the campaign at 600 locations across the city to fight air pollution.

College Student Climb Atop a Train in Coimabtore, Dies

A college student died of electrocution on 8 September, Saturday after he climbed atop a train in Coimbatore and touched the electric wire above it, police said.

Srihari (18) from Nilgiris district and studying BCA in a private college had gone near the Peelamedu Railway Station to have tea with five of his friends from the hostel at around 4 AM, the police said.

At Least 14 killed in Indonesia Bus Crash

At least 14 people died and several others were injured when a bus carrying domestic tourists crashed and plunged into a ravine on the Indonesian island of Java, PTI reported.

The crash happened when the bus with at least 30 people on board was heading to a holiday spot in Sukabumi region in West Java. The vehicle was seen speeding downhill and lost control before plunging into a 10-metre-deep ravine.

LeT Militant Killed, Policeman Injured in Attack on Police Picket in J&K

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was killed and a policeman injured when a some ultras attacked a police picket in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said on Saturday, 8 September.

The attack was launched late Friday night, a police official said, adding that it was successfully repulsed. In retaliatory action, one militant was killed and his weapon was recovered. A policeman sustained injuries and was shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.
