Two US Marine Corps Aircraft Crash off Japan Coast
Two US Marine Corps aircraft crashed during a refuelling operation off the coast of Japan, a US defence official said on Wednesday.
The planes involved were an F-18 fighter and a C-130 tanker, the official said.
In a statement, the Marine Corps said the planes had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan.
Search and rescue operations were underway following a "mishap." The planes "were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," the statement said.

1 Student Killed When Truck Collides With Indiana School Bus
A teenage boy was killed and another student was injured when a flatbed truck collided Wednesday, 5 December, in northern Indiana with a school bus carrying students on a field trip to see a Christmas musical, police said.
The boy, who was seated in the left rear of the bus, died after the truck rear-ended the bus along U.S. 31, near the Marshall County town of Argos, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of South Bend, said Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner.
A 14-year-old boy who was injured in the crash was airlifted to a South Bend hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

At least 12 people died after a rubber boat which spent more than 10 days at sea capsized off Misrata, Libya, the UN migration agency has said, urging search and rescue operations to be stepped up in the Mediterranean.
Ten survivors were rescued and returned to Libya where they were treated by medical staff from the International Organisation for Migration, the UN agency said on Wednesday, 5 December.

2 US Warplanes Crash off Japan; 1 Rescued, 6 Missing
A Marine refueling plane and a fighter jet crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan's southwestern coast after a midair collision early Thursday, and rescuers found one of the seven crew members in stable condition while searching for the others, officials said.
The U.S. Marine Corps said that the 2 a.m. crash involved an F/A-18 fighter jet and a KC-130 refueling aircraft during regular training after the planes took off from their base in Iwakuni, near Hiroshima in western Japan.
The crash took place 320 kilometers (200 miles) off the coast.

New Study Explains Creation of Deadly California ‘Firenado’
A rare fire tornado that raged during this summer’s deadly Carr Fire in Northern California was created by a combination of scorching weather, erratic winds and an ice-topped cloud that towered miles into the atmosphere, according to a study announced Wednesday, 5 December.
The churning funnel of smoke and flame killed a firefighter as it exploded in what already was a vast and devastating wildfire in July on the edge of Redding, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) north of San Francisco.
The wildfire claimed eight lives and destroyed more than 1,000 homes before it was contained on 30 August.

16 Bodies Found After Attack in Indonesia's Papua Wamena
Indonesian security forces have retrieved the bodies of 16 people in the aftermath of a massacre by suspected separatist rebels in restive Papua province, the military said Thursday, 6 December.
The confirmed deaths, believed to be of construction workers, mark the deadliest bout of violence in years to hit a region wracked by a low-level independence insurgency.
The bodies will be evacuated to the town of Timika from the remote district of Nduga, a mountainous region where the attack happened Sunday, local military commander Binsar Panjaitan said.
"The latest information is that 16 bodies have been found," Panjaitan told reporters in Papua.

US Warplane Crash: Second Body Found, 5 Missing
Japan's Defense Ministry says a second crew member has been found in the waters off the Japanese coast where two US Marine Corps warplanes collided and crashed. Five others are still missing.

Child Marriage Costs Countries Billions in Lost Earnings: World Bank
Estimates for 12 countries suggest some USD 63 billion (55.5 billion euros) is lost because child brides complete fewer years of formal education than their peers who marry later.
Every year of secondary education reduces the likelihood of marrying before the age of 18 by five percent or more, it added in the report, "Educating Girls and Ending Child Marriage". West Africa in particular has the highest prevalence of marriage before age 15, and of the top 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage in the world, 18 are in Africa.
Yvette Kathurima Muhia, from the Girls Not Brides organisation of more than 1,000 civil society groups working on the issue, said governments and communities need to work together.
Twenty-four countries have launched national strategies to end the practice since the African Union began a campaign to stop child marriage by 2023.

The Madras High Court has ruled that drivers can show vehicle documents in electronic form when demanded by police or any other official, as stated in a Union government notification last month.
A division bench of Justice Dr Vineet Kothari and Justice Dr Anitha Sumanth Wednesday, 5 December, disposed of various petitions against a memorandum which said vehicle drivers should carry original documents including licence, after recording the notification issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways last month.
India 4th Highest Emitter of Carbon Dioxide: Study
A study has said India is the fourth highest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, accounting for 7 per cent of global emissions in 2017.
The top four emitters in 2017, which covered 58 per cent of global emissions, were China (27 per cent), the US (15 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent) and India (7 per cent), according to the projection by the Global Carbon Project.
The rest of the world contributed 41 per cent last year, it said.

Ahead of a key meeting with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Pakistan is yet to address a critical deficiency in its legal regime that could hamper its capacity to seize properties of terrorist groups and can land it on the anti-money laundering watchdog's blacklist, according to a media report.
Currently placed on the Paris-based FATF'S 'grey list', Pakistan has been scrambling in recent months to avoid being added to a list of countries deemed non-compliant with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regulations by the FATF, a measure that officials here fear could further hurt its economy.

EU Extends Aid to Those Affected By Cyclone Gaja
The European Union (EU) on Thursday announced emergency assistance of 105,000 euros to the communities most affected by cyclone Gaja that hit Tamil Nadu in November.
"In response to cyclone Gaja, which wreaked havoc across large parts of Tamil Nadu in mid-November, the European Commission is allocating 105,000 euros to provide emergency assistance to the most affected communities," the EU said in a statement.
