Trump Intends to End India's Preferential Trade Treatment

US President Donald Trump on Monday, 4 March said that he intends to end India’s preferential trade treatment under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), a programme that allows $5.6 billion worth of Indian exports to enter the United States duty free. The US also intends to terminate Turkey’s designation as a Beneficiary Developing Country under the GSP.

China has increased its defence budget by 7.5 percent for this year, hiking it to USD 177.61 billion from last year's USD 175 billion. It is over three times India's defence budget. This increase makes China the highest spender on defence after the United States.

A fire broke out in the pantry of a running train late at night in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district. The staff separated the pantry car, stopping the fire from spreading to the other bogies of the train. No injuries from the incident have been reported so far. The origin of the fire, which broke out at around 2 am, is not yet known.

Juan Guaido Receives Hero's Welcome in Caracas

Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido received a hero's welcome from thousands of flag-waving supporters chanting "Yes, you can!" as he returned to Caracas on Monday, defying the threat of arrest from embattled President Nicolas Maduro's government.

"We know the risks we face, that's never stopped us. The regime, the dictatorship must understand," a defiant Guaido, who has been recognised as acting president by more than 50 countries, told a delirious crowd.

"We're stronger than ever, let's carry on in the streets, mobilised." Supporters, media, and diplomats from allied countries mobbed Guaido on his arrival at the international airport in Caracas before he headed into the city for a tumultuous homecoming by thousands of supporters.

Tokyo Court Grants Ex-Nissan Chief Ghosn Bail

A Tokyo Court on Tuesday, 5 March, granted ex-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn bail, local media reported, in a shock decision that could see the auto tycoon freed after more than three months of detention.

The court reportedly set the bail at one billion yen (USD 9 million), but prosecutors are likely to appeal the decision and could even file additional allegations against Ghosn to keep him from leaving detention.

Sensex Slips over 50 Points in Early Trade on Weak Global Cues

Equities benchmark Sensex edged lower by over 50 points in early trade on Tuesday, tracking weak global cues amid caution on the US-China trade talks front and concerns over slowing Chinese economy.

The 30-share BSE index was trading lower by 0.14 per cent, or 50.71 points, at 36,013.10 in the opening trade. The broader NSE Nifty was also quoted down by 0.13 per cent, or 14.60 points, at 10,848.90.

In the Sensex pack, weakness was seen primarily in capital goods, IT and financial counters.

Indian equities followed the weak trend prevailing on Asian bourses as investors awaited fresh developments in the China-US trade talks.

Rupee Gains 11 Paise to 70.81 vs USD in Early Trade

The rupee appreciated by 11 paise to 70.81 against the US dollar in opening trade on Tuesday, driven by weakening of the greenback in overseas markets and fresh foreign inflows.

The rupee opened weak at 70.95 at the interbank forex market then gained further ground and touched 70.81 amid a weak opening in domestic equities, displaying gains of 11 paise over its last close.

Forex dealers said, selling of the American currency by exporters supported the rupee.

The rupee Friday had weakened by 20 paise to close at 70.92 against the US dollar.

Fog Disrupts Flight Operations at Delhi Airport

Five flights were diverted from Delhi airport due to fog on Tuesday morning, an airport official said.

"There has been low visibility due to fog since 6.31 am today. Five flights have been diverted till 8.20 am," the official said.

At Delhi, the minimum runway visibility required for take off is 125 metres.

800 Cartons of Illicit Liquor Seized; One Arrested

The police have seized 800 cartons of illicit liquor worth Rs 32 lakh here meant to be supplied at Muzaffarpur in Bihar ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, a police official said Tuesday.

A team led by SHO O P Choudhary intercepted a truck carrying the liquor at Bidali check-post in Shamli district on Monday. The liquor was smuggled from Haryana, SP Ajay Kumar Pandey said.

Rajender Singh has been arrested in this connection, he said.

Railway Cancels 25 Trains, Diverts Seven over Farmers Protests in Punjab

At least 25 trains were cancelled and seven others diverted on Tuesday as protesting farmers blocked railway tracks in Punjab's Amritsar, a Northern Railways statement said. The agitation has left scores of passengers moving to and from Amritsar stranded.

Two trains — the New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express and the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-E-Punjab Express — were short-terminated in Jalandhar City and Beas town respectively.

Illegal Liquor Manufacturing Unit in Manipur Busted, One Arrested

An illegal liquor manufacturing unit has been busted in Manipur's Thoubal district and a woman arrested in this connection, a senior police officer said.

Manipur was declared a dry state in 1991, following widespread demands by locals to curb alcohol and drug use.

During the raid Monday evening, the police seized bottles of an unidentified chemical, suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar, along with a wooden frame for printing labels, aluminum pots and locally made liquor, Superintendent of Police S Ibomcha said.
